Painting Wheels?

I wanted to paint my OEM wheels bronze or even black. I would love to get them powder coated, but honestly I don't want to spend $300-400 on just painting them. Does anyone have DIY on how to self paint. Or even know any good paints that can withstand the brake dust and heat? Thanks for the help ahead of time.

Thats actually a great writeup Fubar did. I pretty much had the idea down, but now seeing his thread, and seeing the results, I feel good about the out come. I just hope Dupli-Color offers a bronze color or maybe even gold.

They don't offer the color gold. Only Black, white, silver, gm, and bronze. So I went with the black. I'll be starting the job tonight if not tomorrow morning. And I'll get back to you guys with pics. wish me luck!

sorry fellas, I tried. It got way to dark too fast. I only had removed one wheels and finished cleaning it throughly when I noticed that it was moments till the lights were completely out. Tomorrow is a new day. I'm gonna try to install a hondata heat shield I picked up today too. I might be too much for one day, but we'll soon find out.

so I'm finally done, I'm still waiting for the clear coat to dry, so I haven't mounted the last two wheels yet. I'll probably be posting tomorrow night. I have a doube shift at work tomorrow so I'll try to snap some shots in the morning. I think they came out pretty good, I also painted the calipers red, so the black wheels look great with the red calipers sitting behind them. So I can say for now I'm satisfied in the wheel department for a bit. Like I had stated in the before I didn't have money for an upgrade on rims now, so this was my alternative for this season. Although I can't wait to some gold 18" babies sitting in my wheels wells. Sorry to keep you guys waiting.

Damn, I thought the entire time that you would be painting the stock US Acura 17" rims. I wonder how that would look if I painted those black to match a NBP.

i just gotta do this rim job. I planned to do it, but didn't have much time. plus i don't have spare tires to mount on TSX or lift jack to have all four wheels lifted while my rims are gettin the paint.

I think black's better for the sole reason of brake dust. The white would look great if they were clean ALL the time. If you let them get dingy and dusty (through simple normal use) it wouldn't look all that.

I guess that's my problem with white wheels in general, but especially in this case, in my opinion.

If anyone is going to try this diy, I'd say follow these directions. They pretty much sum up the job. Although I would add a little to his directions.
1. don't forget to sand down the center cap and paint it as you would the rims
2. make sure you get into all the corners of the wheels, and don't forget the sand down inside lug holes

and accept any help you can get, my wife helped me out with the sanding and it saved a alot of time.

I think it a good idea, just to use as a protective coat. I would def. do it. I'm actually thinking about changing the color now to bronze or maybe gunmetal. I'm not really sure though, but I'm mostly leaning towards bronze. I don't really like the was the black looks in matte. I painted my buddies aftermarket wheels in white and they came out so much better just b/c they weren't matte.
