Oil filter leakage, and on second filter.

hey acurazine members,

I have a 2004 TSX AT with 80,000 mi and I recently replaced my fram oil filter and oil because it was almost time and it was leaking up around the filter. I noticed when I went to twist off the filter it was crispy around the grip part of the fram filter which I have never seen before. I was just wondering if you guys think I might have bought a couple bad filters or if something else might be going on.

I completely cleaned the area when I replaced this last filter that just started leaking after 2.5k mi. So I really dont know why this would be happening twice in a row besides a bad batch of filters(fram, spin on type, PH7317).

Any ideas?

Easy fix. Stop buying Fram filters.

Get a Mobil 1 or a Wix.

You might also have an old gasket stuck to the block. Get a flashlight and take a look with the filter off...

Do you change the washer everytime you change the filter?

How did you install the filter? by hand or with a filter wrench? It should only be installed by hand. It might be installed too tight and damaged the seal.

Make sure that the rubber seal washer is not stuck on the oil filter mount threads. Cheap filters tend to have the seal tear off when you remove the filter. 2 seals means leakages.

Actually, Honda/Acura has a step after hand tight. The OEM filter has printed "knotches" on the filter. They give you the knotches and how many to turn past with a wrench. I've found it is around an 1/8 turn more to seat the gasket.

Of course that is per the Honda gasket spec. No telling if the gaskets on other filters would or wouldn't require the extra turn.
