I've noticed that my AC compressor is squealing when it's on. It's not loud. I have to be in the garage or going through a drive-through to hear it. A little lubricant sprayed on the clutch typically takes care of the problem for a day or so, but it always returns. I've got 100,000 miles on the car. Could it be a sign of a failing clutch mechanism?

 

You'll hear varying opinions on this. My original A/C parts were replaced years ago (see '04 A/C broke thread). It didn't make any type of noise to suggest impending doom. My replacement compressor has been making noise for over 1. I got it checked out last year at a auto A/C repair shop and they told me my A/C system checked out alright. I wasn't charged for them to inspect it. Perhaps have your system checked out by a auto A/C place. While you're there, get a quote to see how much they'd charge for A/C replacement parts and labor. The dealership bill ran me $1,800; while some other forum members were charged more.
