Navi problems
Hey, I am growing really tired of my Navi system getting messed up and showing absolutely wrong locations of my presence. It happens 1 to 2 times a week and begins to annoy me. Am I the only 1 with this problem? Is 4th gen Navi system better on 06+ cars? I know that BMW/Lexus systems are far less familiar to this issue. Why do they even call it a satellite navigation system if it shows wrong location even after I turn it off and turn it back on? Why doesnt sattelite do its job ?
The only time my NAV gets confused of where I am is after I leave my parking garage in downtown Columbus, OH. That is most likely because when I start my car it can't see the satellites, plus when I exit the garage there are tall buildings. After I drive away from downtown (about 3 minutes or so) it figures out where I am and it is fine. Other than that, mine has been working great since April 2003.
I would say you have some other issue. Are your rear windows tinted? Is there anything on the rear window that might throw off the GPS receiver?

Yea, my rear window is tinted and system often gets confused when I drive inside a parking-structure where it cant "see" the sky well. 1 time it happened in the evening and the next day I started the car at an open parking space and it was showing same exact place. Then I drove 80 miles from my house and it was still showing a wrong direction. I have to adjust it manually every time. Where is the receiver located again ? Thank you for advices and info
Sounds like something is wrong with your navi system. I think there was a post similar to this a long time ago. The navi is in your trunk, underneath the rear shelf. That's why they recommend that we don't use metallic tint, since it could reflect signals away from the unit.
If you turn off the car and turn it back on, and it forgot where it actually is, then it's a sure sign. If it only happens in parking structures, and the deviation is only a few yards away, then it's understandable. The navi system extrapolates your position by comparing it's position with those of several gps satellites. If you're by tall buildings, for instance, the signals might reflect off the buildings and confuse your navi system.
I just re-read your last post. When you say that it shows the wrong direction, do you mean that it looks like you're driving backwards?

Thanks for info. I thought that little thing on the back of the roof is the antenna
I mean it senses the speed and turns, but since it begins in the wrong place on the map, it just shows that I drive across rivers and open fields. As I said, it once got confused, I got home and left the car for a night. I woke up in the morning, started the engine and it was showing the same WRONG location where it thought I had left the car (about 60 miles away from my home). I drove to San Francisco (80 mile trip) and it was still showing that I was some where else. How come it did not self-correct? Is there a way to force it to find where it actually is ?

It definitely sounds like you need to have your navi system replaced under warranty. Even if it lost power over night, it should re-triangulate your position and notice that you're somewhere else. Even when I go off roading, the car accurately keeps track of my position and leaves bread crumbs.
Even if you manually correct your position, the navi system will only take the correction during the current trip (e.g., it resets once you turn off the car). The car should remember your last position, even if it can't get a signal from the satellites (it assumes that the car wasn't towed or put into neutral and rolled away).
Someone else had this problem a long time ago. The fix, as I remember it, was that the dealership replaced it under warranty.
i doubt it has nething to do with the tint. cause i have 5% on all my rear windows and i dont have ne problems. but my car is also a 06 so the navi might be a little better but i am not sure. i would ask the dealer and see what they say and go from there.
Tint might affect it some, but not to the point that you're experiencing. There are several tint technologies involved. Dyed tint and ceramic tint won't cause problems. Metallic tint will most likely cause issues.
However, in most cases, it would just mean that you would have less satellites available to do a triangulation. It won't cause your car to "forget" where it was parked. If it's tracking you properly (turns, etc), then it's calculating the signals properly (in relation to your previous positions). The issue lies in pinpointing the exact current location.
I'd take it into a dealership to see if there is a known issue for your system. If there isn't, it wouldn't hurt to ask if they can take care of it through good will. They won't offer it; you have to ask for it.
I have 15% ceramic tint. It's very dark, but I have had no issues at all with it. Perhaps someone was trying to put something big in the trunk of the car, and had smacked it into the navi unit?

Thanks for helpful info u guys, I really appreciate it
I will take it to the dealership. I had a small pillow lying between 2 rear speakers, do u think that could be an issue? I removed it today, but problem doesnt seem to go away after some driving around town. Also, the window was tinted by the previous owner, so I have no clue what type of film they used. And as for 06 models, they use 4th generation Honda navi system, mine is 3rd

Do u think it can really be related to the dark tint of rear window ?
