Is it silver in color, or actual rust color. That happened to one of my trucks. I was told it was from the rail cars. I think it's BS, but could be true. Only way to get it off was to take it in and they did some kind of sanding/ polishing job.

I was told by my buddy that this can happen during transport (he has a TL). Little flakes of metal get stuck in the paint and then rust. If you feel along the sheetmetal you will notice these jagged little pieces sticking out. The solution is to claybar the car and remove all of these flakes. Once I did this it was smooth as silk.

Check out www.autopia.org for more information on how to remove it. I know this type of question was posted there not too long ago.

It could also be due to brake dust. I have some all over on my car. No worries, it comes off when you wax it. You can also buy the right detergents before you wax to remove the smal metal dust to prevent from glazing the paint while you're waxing.

Rail Dust
Commonly referred to as "rail dust" usually caused by metal flakes from railroad tracks during transport on rail cars. This is why a lot of new cars arrive at dealers with that white plastic sheeting on certain parts of the car. It is usually noticable on lighter color cars.
Claybar is the answer (as everyone has already said).

The paint on this car sucks. My hood and bumper is taking a beating. I have that 3m clear bra but there are so many chip marks I don't even want to put the clear bra on. They are so small they look like dust but it is very dissapointing.
Also the rail dust story is true. Even if you park your car near trains the metal dust from the wheels, rails, and brakes settles on your car. Then the dust rusts on top of the paint surface. So if that dust is combined with our cheap azz chipping paint. You get the picture. I'm a locomotive engineer.
