Maintenance Required Light
Maintenance Required Light
After I turn on my car, the Maintenance Required light blinks on and off for about 10-15 seconds, but after that it stops. I really don't remember this happening before (I've had the car for 5 months now) Is this normal? Because if there is a problem, wouldn't the light just stay on? Someone please advise. Thanks!
Okay good, at least I'm not the only one. But I'm pretty sure the light never blinked like this the last couple of months because everytime I put the car in gear, the light would never be blinking but now it is. Oh well I guess I'm not going to worry about it anymore. Thanks!
If anyone else can vouch on this, that would be great too.

Do you have 8000 miles on your car? If you do then that is a reminder to take your car in for service. It will do it from 8000-10000 miles, after that it will stay on continously. The manual explains how to reset it.

If you read your owner's manual, it explains how you can reset the light yourself... provided that you've performed the recommended maintenance.

How to Reset
Press and hold the trip/reset button, turn the igition switch ON (II), and continue to hold the button for more than 10 seconds.

Has anyone been able to program the light to come on earlier? I drive in LA traffic in 100+ degree heat and feel 8000 miles is just too much, thus when the light comes on, I usually just reset it and ignore it. I would like to have it come on around 3500 or 4000.

Car makers take road and regional conditions in mind when they build cars and set up the maintenance schedule. EVERYBODY drives in heat and traffic. Your case is nothing special.
The service light is only useful to those who use the "normal" duty (i.e. 10,000-mile interval) schedule. It's actually of little use when following the "severe duty" schedule, unless you want to be reminded every other service.
The service light is actually rather redundant for most (possibly all) of the people who post on this board anyway, since I have a hunch that nobody here will "forget" to change their oil.
"Oh my gosh, it's been 12,000 miles since my last oil change! How could I have been so forgetful!?"
Yeah, right...
