Lower Left Corner of the Engine Bay - What is it called?

I'm talking about the part that rolls the metal "tape" along. I'm wondering if it's normal for there to be really loud grinding noise coming from this part. For some reason it doesn't seem to be spinning too fluidly. Thanks for any help I can get.

As always, sorry for the stupid questions.

WTF? Are you referring to where the timing CHAIN is? You'll hear a bit of clatter since it's a chain and not a belt.

Could you use a diagram to point to where you're referring to?

I don't think he's talking about the timing chain. You have to remove the engine cover in order to see the timing chain. Is he talking about the belt that drives other accessories?

fatcat, take a picture and post it here so we have a better understanding of what you're talking about.

Yes the alternator. Sorry I'm a complete noob. Have been trying to pick up some useful data from this board here and there. Do you guys ever have LOUD noise coming from that part? Wondering if it were normal. Never seemed to be a nuisance on my old car, but for some reason it sounds as if it's the loudest part of the car at idle...

Thanks again for any replies.

The tape part is what blew my mind too but I second the alternator guess.

Posting links to a Trans AM site isn't going to help the issue.

Sorry, having a little fun at your expense.

I think that looks like a belt tensioner but it's hard to tell in that pic. It might just need some oil.

That's the power steering pump. If it's making a grinding noise, you should definitely let your dealer check it out.

Thanks for the feedback Dan. I did a search on what can go wrong with the power steering pump and belt and it doesn't seem like I have any of those problems (low steering fluid, belt being too tight/loose...etc). But I will give my service dept a call on Monday nonetheless.
