Look in Your Trunk!

I popped my trunk yesterday, and the top inside portion (the channel that water runs off through) is showing signs of rust! It's the top side closest to the rear, before the channel turns vertical. There's a weld/join there, and it's right there that it's starting to rust. Okay...anyone else have this or am I the only lucky one? Maybe it's just the SSM paint?

That's interesting. I'd like to see what you're talking about too.

Try resizing the pic to make it smaller and/or if it's a GIF, convert it to a JPG. That should make it a little smaller.

hondaboy, you can't post pics directly. You have to host it somewhere and post a link to it.

Rust?....Rust???????????Lets all hope that it's adhesive and not rust! I'd really hate to see rust added to the list of problems. Rust this early is TOTALLY UNEXCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say it's more than likely not adhesive. It wasn't there for the first 6 months or so that I've had the car (I'd know as I always dry the inside of the trunk "gutter" when I wash the car.) Over the cold winter months, I haven't had the chance to clean the car as well as I'd like. Now, finally having the chance to get all the gunk off of my car, I've been blessed with rust!

Am I the only one with this problem???

I'm not sure if I have this. But I'm definately glad I sprung for the rust proofing and lifetime warranty that comes with it!

That doesn't look good Hondaboy. You should also look under the rubber strip that runs along the back of the trunk opening. Your dealer will have to fix the problem under warranty. Don't wait too long before it spreads! Good luck to you.

Ok guys, here is what you don't want to hear. A second confirmation of a rust sighting. I have in the same are found this rust stain on my SSM. I have no extra rust proofing. I would never have looked if Hondaboy hadn't posted. I'll bring it in and see what they say. What would they possibly do? Repaint? Put a sealant? Any one else ever have rust issues under warranty?

EDIT: I am able to wipe the rust away with a dry cloth. Underneath it looks like normal paint or maybe a tiny crack/indentation in the paint that allows the water pooling there to eat at the metal beneath. But now I have wiped my "evidence" of the rusting away and have to wait for it to come back to show the dealer. For me it seems to be happening on the edge of the smaller of the two circles that you can see posted in this thread and in one area where there are tiny air bubbles in the paint. WTF!!!

I hope Acura is going to step up to the plate on this one but I have a feeling they'll leave it to get worse. The warranty doesn't cover rust like that. It only covers perforation corrosion which means the trunk would actually have to have a hole in it before they have to do anything. Now obviously that's not acceptable but if they are a real pain in the ass about it they can use that angle to try and talk you out of it.

Keep us posted....

What protection do we have as consumers against this? The car was put on the road last novemeber. Surface corrosion should not happen this quick. If they want to give me the "not a perforation" argument I can accept that only if the car has been on the road a couple of years. Not 5 months.

Can we get more pics. I don't understand where to look.

On a related note, my 00 Civic was showing the same signs within the moonroof area. I brought it to Honda. They removed the entire interior headliner. Sanded and then repainted the entire area. I had the car for 2 1/2 years after the work was done and the problem did not return.

I can't put up pictures but here is where to look:

1. Face the back of the car and lift your trunk up.
2. Look at the area where the trunk lid would rest upon if it was closed.
3. Look at the part of it that faces the sky, not your thighs.
4. You will see circle marks left by the stamping process as well as creases in the metal. Check all those areas for rust discoloration.

Guys, add me to the list too!

I checked last night and didn't see anything but I just checked now that it's brighter out and I can just see some rust starting where the spot welds have been made. It's a very very small amount on my car but it's starting to form around every spot weld in the drain channel of the trunk. I don't have any rust in the groves like Hondaboy does but you can see the small circle in his picture that I'm having problems with. I'm not going to complain about it for now but i'm going to spray some rust inhibitor in the area to stop it from spreading....

Dan,

That is exactly where I have the problem. Why would you not complain about it now? Isn't this something to be really worried about? What colour is your car?

Mine is silver but it's so minor that they would probably laugh at me. I don't know if I could even take a picture of it because its so small. I'm going to keep my eye on it and I'll mention it at my next service.

OK, I misunderstood and thought maybe you weren't concerned. I'm planning to watch it and mention it the next time it goes in also.

Rust warranty is 7 years right?

I went with Crown Rust which also gives a lifetime warranty if applied yearly. I'll let you guys know what I find later.

I looked in my trunk earlier, but didn't find any rust spots. Lets just hope it stays that way.

No rust here either guys. Then again my car is dark blue so it may have been difficult to tell. But I'm fairly certain.

I have a lifetime rust proff warranty as well, but i'm wondering what the conditions of it are. Would it include surface rust?

I would venture to say that unless you have the white or silver models it will be hard to see the rust marks. Run a white cloth over the area and see if the cloth picks up the red from the rust.

LurchTSX,

I have those same problems including the marks on the hood. My car came back from the dealer and they cleaned the spot welds and put a white grease over the surface to inhibit the rust.

Let us know what your dealer says.

Lurch, let us know what the dealer says. I luckily don't have a single spot of rust yet, but I am quite concerned. This is unacceptable. If my car starts rusting I may have to change my answer in this thread: http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/show...&threadid=7102

Can we make this a poll?

Crazydude, the dealer should be able to fix this pretty easily. A rust inhibitor should fix the problem. Technically this isn't covered under warranty because the rust hasn't perforated the steel but the dealer shouldn't give you any trouble with fixing it for free.

Almost forgot....the welds in the trunk isnt really the problem....there was a hairline crack in the paint in the rain gutter around the trunk that was rusting.

Don't get me wrong i was'nt impressed with the rust on the welds, but the mgr of the body shop did make a point that the welds make little pools for the water to sit and causes surface rust.
