Inconsistent Idle.

I tried searching for this but could not find any information. My idle does not vibrate severely but the is a very inconsistent vibration. There seems to be a slight increase in vibration every 2 to 3 seconds. I opened the hood to see if the engine shakes noticeably every 2-3 seconds but it seems fine. Inside however, you can feel the intermittent vibration. Does anyobody know what is up with this? Can I adjust the idle myself?

I would take it to the dealer and ask them. either something is wrong with one of they cylinders.

or this is just the normal vibration you get from a 4 cylinder. remember that engines with more cylinders were originally designed to prevent vibration and idle smoother. power was just a byproduct.

Are you using 91 octane fuel? Have you tried to change gas stations because not all fuels are created equal.

I use 93 Octane (Shell V-power) and have been at several stations. The car has been like this ever since day one but I doubt that most would feel the vibration if they were riding my car. I am just very sensitive and nitpicky.

Does it get better after it warms up? The ECU has a very interesting, constantly adjusting warmup pattern until the engine is hot, you'll idle anywhere between 600 and 1600 until the ECU is happy. Once you've been driving for 15 mins tho it should smooth out.

Also does it only do this while in gear?

I have this problem, if it is problem. Doesn't seem to be related to warming up, in fact I think it might be related to cooling down? I only get it when I'm waiting at a light after driving for awhile. I think it might have something to do with the A/C but it hasn't bothered me enough for me to turn off my A/C to test it.

I have an 06 6spd and i experience slight vibrations every few seconds during idling. The rpm needle doesn't actually jump at all during this though. Don't really know what the cause of it is but if anyone has taken it to the dealer and they actually had a fix for it please do inform us. I'm assuming that the vibration is so slight the mechanics at the dealership will either say they don't feel anything or say i'm crazy to think that's a problem with the car.

My car does the same thing; it seems odd for a Honda engine and may be related to the motor mounts being used; my car also has a slight lag when accelerating from a stop. Acura people tell me that this is related to the "fuzzy logic" software being used. To be honest, I have just gotten used to this although I still dont like it very much!

turn off your AC. sometimes you'll leave it on inadvertently, but that's bad for (a) mileage, (b) power, and (c) weird idling when the compressor turns on/off.

Yeah the vibration is slight and I totally agree that the technicians will probably not notice it. I am surprosed that more people are reporting this issue.

For the record, I have 950 miles on the car and it is a manual tranny.

To make this inconsistent idling even more inconsistent ... yesterday, my car seems to be idling well and the vibration was not there (or at least not noticeable), but today it was more pronounced. WTF?? Anybody taken it to the dealer yet?

FYI: This occurs whether or not I have the A/C on or not.

I think I might be having this same issue. It just started when I parked on my way home from work tonight. I'll check into it more extensively tomorrow in the light.

How low does the idle get before it pops back up to normal? Mine drops to about 500 rpm.

I used to have a solid idle at 750, but as of recently, I have inconsistent idle between 850 and 950. It will hop around that range, not fast, but noticable. Happens regardless of warming up or cooling down and no accessories turned on. Don't know if this is coincidence, but I only noticed this after changing to 94 octane (instead of 91). I have now changed back to 91 octane.

I have what I think to be the exact same problem. I started a thread about this awhle back. I've talked to the dealer about this twice and both times they've adjusted idle and it didn't help. It's not realted to the AC and it happenes wheather the car is hot or cold. I also hooked up a ODBD II reader and nothing. Its very annoying.

I'm hoping its related to the plugs? I'll be changing them soon.

I went out last night after posting above and it didn't seem to be happening. I let it sit and warm up fully (two cycles of fans) but even with the AC on there was no wierd idle. I also was able to put my ear right on the head cover to listen for any tapping but much to my relef I didn't hear any.

Today I'm going to pull the plugs and see what they look like. I might also go borrow a compression tester to see what I can see.

On a side note: Where do you guys buy gas? I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not but I bought the gas that is in the car right now at Chevron. A friend of mine just bought a GTI and threw three codes two nights ago (Random Misfire, Misfire - Cyl 1, Misfire - Cyl 2). He bought the same gas (91) at a Chevron one mile from where I bought mine. Also, I was talking to another friend who said she had an inconsistent idle about a week ago on Chevron 87 but that it's gone now.

I usually purchase gas from Chevron or Shell, and sometimes 76. I"ll try to pay attention to the brand of gas I have in my car during this problem. But as it seems, I notice it every time so the brand of gas may not be the issue for me. More than anything though it's annoying as heck. I remember when I first purchase the car I couldn't stop thinking about how smooth this baby was. Then suddenly the DBW and FI cut-off during 0% throttle and now the slight rumble during idle kinda drives me crazy.

Ive driven several TSX's (Owned 2 and have had two loaner cars for a couple days each.) The idle tends to get lumpier when you run cheap gas in them. Other vibrations are probably just artifacts of a larger I-4 engine and production variances. Some engines are better balanced than others due to these variances, but within certain tolerances it doesnt harm anything.
