HELP!! VIOLENT vibrations above 45mph

Hey All. My brother is about to buy a TSX. We went to go look at one. Everything was flawless about it, but when we took it onto the highway above like 50mph, there was a VIOLENT shaking of the steering wheel. The seller claimed he didn't know why the car shook so bad at high speed. I'm hoping its not anything major as he is pretty much locked into the deal already.

Any clues as to why I could be getting violent feedback at highway speed? P.S. The rotors looked pretty worn, but I'm not sure if that could that affect the steering? the tires looked ok, not sure if they were balanced properly...any similar experiences/fixed would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Road force balance the wheels and tires. If the shaking continues, you may have a bent wheel. Even if the rotors are "warped" (which most likely is not the case), the shaking would only happen if you were braking, not just traveling in a straight line.

Oh, and thread moved to Problems & Fixes...

For me even if there's a small problem with it, I will not buy it

Yes, back out of the deal now, while you still can...

This may be a fairly inexpensive problem, or something very expensive!

If it's a bent rim or out-of-round tire, it will be quite obvious when slowly rotating the wheel once the car is up on a lift.

I'd have a mechanic thoroughly check out the car, or otherwise you could just screaming for the door.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the timing chain has skipped a tooth.

I've seen this be caused by having that tire patch stuff sprayed into a tire to seal a leak. If its not removed afterward, it causes vibration as the tire is unbalanced. Unlikely but possible.

I agree with a Hunter Road Force balance. I had one done at my dealer after experiencing really bad shaking at highway speeds as well.

vibrations can be due to many things
-suspension problems
-wheels out of balance
-wraped rotors

my guess is like those of others.... wheels might be not balanced.

im sorry but that makes NO sense at all. if your timing was off it would show all over the rpm band. it would not only start to cause the engine to perfrom diff at 45+.

wheel shake is 95% of the time a out of balance rim/tire. its not a big deal.certainly not a reason to not buy a car.

you probably only need to get your wheels aligned, and maybe get the wheels balanced, you could have lost a wieght.
