Help! I broke a bolt

Help! This morning while working on the car I snaped a bolt on the
top cover of the engine. Here's a picture of it.
(yes it's not my picture, but one from the user smock9)

engine shot.

On the picture, it's the bolt on the left of the photo, just
below the black cover piece.
My question, is how bad is this if I leave it as is...
(ie. will oil start coming out cause it's no longer bolted down)
and if I have to fix it, how hard will it be to replace that bolt.
I was not tightning it that hard. I had no idea it would snap apart.
basically it snapped off clean. The section under underneath
the nut is almost perfectly aligned with the bottom of the bolt.
schematics of the engine area of how to take it apart and replace
it would be nice...

Could you be more specific which bolt is broken? Perhaps circle it or something...

JTso, I think he means the valve cover bolt, right most bolt, lower side of the valve cover..

And to answer your question x-z24, you would possibly leak oil out since that part of the valve cover seats down on the corner of the gasket. You will need to get it replaced.

can't circle it cause it's not really my picture..
however a better description would be the lower right bolt on the top face of the valve cover unit.

In that case, it's an easy fix.

1. Remove the top spark plug cover.
2. Remove the rest of the nuts that hold down the valve cover.
3. Remove any hoses that attached to the cover.
4. Remove valve cover from cylinder head.
5. Remove the broken stud with a deep socket or box-end wrench.
6. Replace the stud and reinstall everything back on.

Note: pay attention to the condition of the valve cover gasket and replace it if necessary.

The stud is under #15

The part you need to replace should be #8, but verify it at the parts counter.

hmmm... yeah I went there at lunch time today for them to look at.
the stem and nut will cost about $10. Install will be about $50,
about 1/2 hour to do. They have to order in the part which
will be here next week. He said it good to drive on and shouldn't
leak seeing that the other nuts were on tight.
So anyways, seeing how the schematic looks and plus that it's the engine itself.
I think I will not take the risk of openning it up myself. I'll pay the $50 to get replaced. The tech had a look at it for me and asked about the gasket too.
I told him 26k for mileage and he said its ok and doesn't need to be replaced.
thanks everyone for your help...
thanks JTso for the pics. Do you have a manual or something or did you find
that on the net? Cause I'd like to have a reference book myself if I can get one.
