Hmmm, my mechanic is saying definitely not an exhaust leak, heat shield, or anything obvious. We both agree it sounds as if it is coming from the dash area.
What is a good next step? Is troubleshooting and fixing a noise problem covered by warranty?

OK I know this thread did not get much action, but I am extremely happy to say this is fixed.
I spent a lot of time driving and listening and was certain that the part that was rattling at 3000 - 3500 rpm had to be part of the exhaust or intake (not the dash as my mechanic felt)...it was too strong of a rattle and too resonant to be otherwise.
It did sound like it was driver side, which may indicate intake. I quickly determined that the air-box is kind of loose on its shock mount, and the tube into the resonator is also quite - both are points that outright should rattle at a resonant frequency.
OK so long story long, I folded up an old rear floor mat and wedged it in between the airbox and the frame area behind it...voila...the entire noise, which was quite bad, has gone away.
So it will really be gone once I put in my CAI which has been sitting in the garage with my header until this problem was fixed.
