This is an issue I have had for the past 10K miles (27K on car) 2004 6MT

I am experiencing an engine surge. When I say surge, this is what happens. For instance I am going a big hill… I am in 3rd 3500 rpm for sometime. I put the hammer down to climb up in R’s …. Surge surge surge before I get up to 5500 rpm, shift into 4th. The engine is not smooth. It reminds me of driving an old car with a vacuum hose leak.

It has been in the shop 4 times for the same issue and every time they find nothing. The dealership tells me the fuel trims are correct and there are no DTCs. However when I rode with a tech, he noticed the problem and said it acted like it was starving for air. He checked the air filter to find my clean K&N drop in.

He suggested a short ram intake. I have installed the K&N short ram and the problem is still there.

One time they told me this is normal… however it didn’t happen for the first 17K miles. So how could it be normal?

No oil consumption, spark plugs look great. I always run premium unleaded gas.


Any ideas?

I am 2 seconds from trading it off and hate to do that... however I don't want it to turn into a bigger problem once it is out of warranty.
