Engine overheating

Temp gauge shot up as I was sitting in traffic; pulled over and found the throttle body inlet hose had ruptured..finally got around to replacing it and added some coolant in the radiator just as a precaution...

took the car around the block after replacing the hose and temp still shot up...

anyone run into this problem?

I'm guess it has to be either the water pump not working properly or maybe the thermostat sensor..

Sorry to hear about this. Several questions:

1) What year is your TSX?

2) How many miles do you have on it?

I have read on these boards before of other members replacing the water pump. But that member only did so after the pump was making some noise.

I cannot recommend that you add water to a car immediately after it has overheated. You should wait for a couple of hours to let it cool. The cold water striking the hot engine can crack the block.

Thermostat may be a possibility. However, I believe I also read on these boards in the past that the TSX has the type of thermostat that will only break while in the open position and not in the closed position. Anybody can confirm this? If it only breaks in the open position, it would always stay open ad let water circulate thru engine (problem with this would be that car would run rough in mornings before warming up).

It's a 2004 with right around 208,000 miles on it now.

Air trapped in cooling system can cause apparent overheats w/ rapid temp changes on temp gauge. Suggest topping off coolant into radiator (Not reservoir) by slowly filling w/ fresh honda coolant mix.

good luck

i would start with thermostat sensor cause they are the ones that tell the fan to turn on

If you sprung a leak in a hose and had to fix it you could have an air bubble which is restricting coolant flow. Even if your thermostat is working (which is could possibly not be) you could still restrict flow. If you filled it up with coolant make sure to bleed the system.

Yes, the TSX has the thermostat that only fails in the "safe" conditon (open) but a restriction can still cause the car to overheat.

just a follow-up to this...looks to be the temp sensor that kick the fans on that may be causing this issue..

I replaced the failed hose and burped/bled the system and monitored the temps and identifed the fans never kicked on...

Will be replacing the sensor and the upper/lower radiator hoses and will try again...
