A deer problem

Anyone know if those deer whistles actually work? It's the little plastic whistle like device that one sticks to the front grill that supposedly put out a ultrasonic noise when the car is moving.

If that works does it work at 15-30mph or only at highway speeds?

It does work, but at 30mph you should usually benefit from enough visibility from the lights, even laterally to be able to stop in time, or at least avoid.

Mix reviews, and no, you don't have to go at highway speeds for the sound to come out. Deers are more prown to get hit at night because they get fixated on the lights of your car. I had to come to a complete stop and blow my horn AND turn off my lights in order for the deer to run away. So if the horn didn't scare the deer, I don't think some whistle will.

Don't get the whistle. Get the one that connects to the battery. The reason is, when bugs get stuck inside the whistle, it doesn't work.

Deer Whistles

Those deer whistles don't work. The reason being that the sound is made by air passing through the whistle so that the sound is behind. If you really want some type of device to warn the deer, you have the to buy the shistles that emit sound in front of you. These devices are electronic and make noise at any speed. JW

Sauceman, I would generally agree if you have some open space next to the road. In my case it is a two lane country road with stands of trees right next to the road - no shoulders-and the deer was trying to make it a one hopper across. Nearly $5K damage on a 6 month old car with less than 5K miles. Unfortunately, I have to take that road every day to get home.

Tonto 340 and TSX 7 I agree a active device would be better - where would I find such a gizmo?

Tonto 340 even though the sound is created the whistle would it not be heard ahead of the car? Unless of course I am travelling at supersonic speed?

Deer whistles don't really work. Have a buddy from Denver who, even with deer whistles on his car, had a run-in with a deer. Took the deer whistles clean off the bumper.
