Cracked winshield!

I was driving around a friend tonight and he asks me if I knew there was a crack in my winshield. I had no clue, its right behind the rear view mirror and totally unnoticable to the driver but its 6-8in already.

I'm wondering where it came from, I didn't see it a week ago when I washed my car. There is no chips/mark inside or outside, so it looks like an internal crack. My winshield starting creaking REALLY bad when the temperature dropped at night recently. I'm wonderng if looseness in the winshield twisted it enough to produce a crack. I think the crack is creaking now, as it makes sounds when I go over bumps.

I'm sure this is an isolated event, but any suggestions? I've never had a crack in my winshield before.

I haven't read the threads, but I assume that is correct. If you can prove that a factory defect (like the loose/creaking windshield combined with the change in weather in the other thread), then you may have a case for it to be under warranty. Just my

here's the thread Im talking about: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3019

No windshield are not covered by warranty, but your insurance might cover the damage. I recently fixed rock chip on my windshield but sadly it is still visible. I have Progressive insurance and they were willing to change my windshield but I was afraid if they mess up my car by putting new windshield it might generate crazy wind blowing sounds, and I didn't want to deal with those kind of problems so I just went to the local AB Glass to fix or preventing from cracking more. sorry to hear that.
P.S. Don't try to save money on changing windshield!! When I had Nissan Maxima, I also had to change my windshield but instead of taking it to the Nissan I took it to local shop which offered me great deal. $180 for windshield...couple of days later I picked up my car....driving....man I can't even put it in words!! it was just so sad!! disaster!! Find right people to do the job!!

If there is no evidence of an impact, you should be okay getting it fixed under warranty.

Dude that sucks, but like Sauce said if there is no evidence of impact, it is probably a faulty windshield or bad install. You should be covered.

Warranty or not, get it replaced at the dealer. I inquired on replacing my windshield (massive stonechip) at an auto glass shop, and their "replacement" windshield (obviously non-oem) looked like shit. It was missing the shaded areas around the edges and rearview mirror.

The guy also said it was a pain to do because of the placement of our reaview up against the windshield.

Well I called my dealership and I'm bringing it in to be looked at tonight. They said some cracks are covered under warranty, and I'm optimistic that mine falls in that category.

Maybe it happened WHEN you washed your car. That pic looks like a stress fracture. Sometimes it happens when you wash your car on a hot day.

Sorry to hear that. That's a weird place for a rock to hit. Did they give you a quote to replace it?

i think it was about $600, $450 for winshield and $125 for labor. it needs to be speical ordered first.

That's not too bad. On my old A4, I was quoted more like $900 for factory OEM at the dealer. An independent with OEM-equivalent glass did it for just over $300.

Unlike some here, I wouldn't absolutely recommend against independents. But you have to be careful. Keep in mind that there are only 3-4 auto glass companies in the world, so the odds are pretty good that the "OEM equivalent" glass came out of the same factory, and just got a different name stamped on it. Sometimes they do cut corners on things like tint at the top, which is why care is warranted and a reputable glass shop is recommended.

My closest Acura dealer doesn't even do many things in house -- including glass and most tire/alignment stuff -- they send the cars down the street to a local shop they have a regular working relationship with. You can usually get the same work done a lot cheaper by going directly to the guy who'se doing the work. The independent who did my A4 also does most of the glass work for several of the Beverly Hills auto dealers.

Like everything else, it's a matter of knowing who's doing the work. If you can't get good references, the dealer is always a safe way to go.

That's too bad it was a stone, but shots around the edges usually do crack. I'm going to stick with my "use oem" comment, but if you're out shopping at independents, watch to see of they are wearing gloves when handling the glass. That's one of the easiest ways to determine if its a shop you should avoid.

well its getting replaced tomorrow. geico wouldn't pay for the dealership to sublet the work w/ an OEM winshield. i specifically asked if their replacement winshield has the black strip around the outside and tinted part at the top and they said yes. so hope all goes well.
