Changing my own oil
Changing my own oil
So it seems I lost my car's owners manual for 2005 TSX, so I don't really know what type of oil to buy and what type of oil filter to use. I went to Kragens anyways and bought a 2 ton jack (to lift my car up), Gtx 2-30 oil, and a fram oil filter. I went home and tried to change the oil myself but had difficulty using the jack. So I gave up and now I'm contemplating on returing all the items I bought.
I need help on changing my own oil. Any tips?

5w-30 is the oil you use. you can try others, but that's what your oil cap says to use.
you can use any fitting oil filter, OEM honda ones, or K&N ones, or even Fram ones I suppose.
you have to have a new crush washer for each oil change. it needs to be replaced
each and every time.
other than that there's a piece of the underbody in the way that needs to be removed
then replaced each time... and the rest is pretty basic/standard.
part numbers:
OEM oil filter: 15400-PLM-A01
Drain Washer (14mm): 94109-14000

5w30 is what you should be using. I don't know when the changeover happened, but I do remember when I first bought my car in 2006, I did a search before I did my oil change and the older threads said to use 5w20. Acura now recommends 5w30, and they'll replace your cap if it still says 5w20 (in case you just bought the car and the previous owner always did the oil change himself/herself).
What you need to do is to lift the passenger's front tire and remove that wheel. That will give you a ton of clearance for reaching the oil drain plug, and if you sit cross-legged, you'll be able to access the oil filter (did you buy an oil filter clamp/holder?).
The oil drain plug is covered by a flap. If it has been taken to a dealership for an oil change, they may have removed the flap and left it off.
As mentioned above, make sure you use a new crush washer each time.

Btw, if you want more info, just go to "search" from the menu and type in "oil change". There should be many existing threads on the topic.
