Car Starting Problem

So I am having a very interesting issue with my 05 automatic TSX. Sometimes when I try to start the car the engine will crank but it will not turn over. I have to then turn the key back to the off position, count to approx 5 seconds and then try again. Up until today, when I had this issue, I would only have to try starting it 2 times before it would finally start. Today, it took 5 times and on the fifth try it started right up.

I had a starter go on an older car and it doesn't appear to sound like a starter issue. Also, the battery is original, but it does not sound like it's laboring to crank the engine.

One other interesting symptom is that I only have this problem on hot days. Today it was about 88 degrees. In the winter months this problem was non-existent.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks

Shane

Heat-related problems can be a bi*ch to troubleshoot. Let's start with the basics: how many miles on the vehicle and what gas are your using?

My first guess is a flakey fuel pump relay meaning your FP is not always providing fuel pressure. If you listen really close near the fuel tank, have someone turn the key to ignition - you should hear the FP run for a second or so and then stop - the fuel rail is now pressurized and the engine should start.

It's a 2005 automatic TSX with 75K. I always use Premium gasoline.

Someone at work suggested looking at the distributor cap to see if there was any noticeable condensation.

The TSX doesn't use a distributor.

Even if the problem is not due to your battery, you are absolutely due for a new battery. Your battery is now more than 4 years old on your 2005 TSX. It has served you well but should not last much longer. I am surprised it has lasted more than four years. The original TSX batteries have been known to fail prematurely.

So just change your battery as a first step. Even if this is not the problem, your are going to have to do it very soon anyway.

I recommend Interstate or Optima batteries.

Do you mean not turn over as in, the engine will crank but will not fire up? Or do you mean the engine will not physically turn over?

If the engine cranks but will not fire up, it may be possible your ignition switch is wearing out.

If the engine won't physically turn over, check the battery and the connections to the battery. If you are still running the original battery, replace it as it's way past due!
