Camshaft Position Sensor

My 04 Tsx Engine check light came on and i got it checked out. They said its my camshaft positioning sensor. Will that affect my car starting? Ive had to get it jumped three times already. I try to start it and all i hear is "Click, click, click, click, click" also when i drive it the performance seems to be slugging. And to add more on it i can be driveing and all off a sudden the VSA light will come on. This ever happen to anybody?

Well if jumping it is starting the car, then it cant be the sensor. So either your battery is going or its the alternator.

I would say that yes it could affect your starting.

The CAS tells the computer where the crankshaft is in its rotation. Using the crankshaft position, it tells the spark plugs when to fire.

If the CAS is defective it could be telling the plugs to fire too early or too late. Might be especially noticably during cold starts and would DEFINITELY affect power. Retarded timing will decrease power.

Wouldn't surprise me if it is all related.

It does sound like the battery is also bad too. Im not an expert, but it doesnt hurt to wiggle some wires and make sure they are all tight.

So how is it that when he gets a jump, the car starts?

It really sounds like multiple problems,
First, the crankshaft sensor and related wiring can cause an intermittent crank but no start condition. However, when you get the “click click” that indicates a bad (week) battery or bad connections (ground and/or +). A bad or week battery can also cause things like ABS/air bag and VSA indicators to flash.

I would start with a battery and charging system load test and an inspection of the battery cables.

When you get it to the point where it cranks but won’t start or it doesn’t always start then look at the crank and cam sensors.

I have replaced a few intermittent sensors in the past.
