Bad Gas Mileage
Bad Gas Mileage
Hey guys I have a TSX Auto '05 with 8500 miles on it but for some reason I am only averaging 13 mpg. I live in Brooklyn, NY. I know in NY there are a lot of stop lights but I shouldnt be getting that low of a gas mileage. I would say I am an average driver. I would floor it once in a while but most of the time I would stay at 40 mph. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

Maybe your pedal foot is heavy? if you're driving MT, whats ur shift. If you're driving AT, whens the computer shift? Flooring it and revving hard greatly affects the mileage, especially in stop and go situations. Its not how fast you go, its how quickly you get to higher speeds which affect your gas mileage. If you're hard accelerating every 2 blocks due to red lights, only to stop, your wasting tons more gas than crusing at 55 m.p.h or accelerating gradually.
Stop and go is
to mileage, especially with a heavy foot.

Drop the shifts to 2-2.5K (driving like Miss Daisy unfortunately), and that'll minimise the fuel usage.
Use the higher RON gas you guys have over there - that'll help and will offset the slight price difference.
Don't run the AC full time - 10-15 mins each day to keep the pump lub'd with the oil in the system.
Try and coast more rather than driving up to the back of someone and nailing the the anchors.
I got 240 odd miles with about 55% tankful remaining (based on needle position being accurate reflection), and I know now that the rear tyres were not anywhere near their optimum pressure, when I picked the car up. In fact they were very low, but felt fine.
This in a combination of stop-start city, 50-55mph on open dual lane carriageways, and 80-85 on the motorway, and enough 30-35mph main village type roads.
All changes done between 2-2.5K.
I reckon that was approx. 35 or so mpg.

what does your MID say that your avg. speed is?

i agree, and also. if you're a heavy foot don't use the automatic while driving, use the tip tronics to manually shift it yourself. another thing you can also do is when you hit the 3k or 3.5k mark and you think you're going more, just let go of the accelerator just a little bit and the computer will automatically shift up for you.
it should work with those two ways.
i get around 17 mpg, with my auto shifting at 3k, so try to go easy on her (at least for a little bit) to see if the mpg goes up.
On one of my fillups, I averaged 13mpg when I went from brooklyn to manhattan, sitting in traffic most of the time.
Hows your mileage on the highway?

A/C on or off doesn't make much of a difference. Maybe only 2-3mpg. How much throttle you apply gives a larger effect on your fuel consumption. Are you using 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or full throttle when taking off from 0 up to 60mph?
Barring any actual problems with the engine I counsel checking the pressure in your tires at least once a week. It will astound you the difference it will make in your mileage.
I'm an aggressive driver, with a 4-mile commute each way through traffic (i get stopped about 13 times). I practically floor it if I'm at the front. I get 18 mpg approximately (I never drive on the freeway for anything). I also usually have the A/C running...
I don't know if your intake has any effect on it. I noticed lower gas mileage and pick-up speed on my accord when I installed an intake. That's why I'm not really considering to put an intake on my TSX
