Auto tranny doesnt shift smooth 1st to 2nd

Does anyone notice that 1-2nd gear isnt smooth? it doesnt change smoothly when going into second gear. there is a noticeable slow down when it shifts, almost like some is pressing on the brakes when shifting. The rest of the gears are SMOOTHER, but not really considered smooth. for comparison, i have an 88 civic, it shifts going into 2nd 3rd 4th UNNOTICED. Its the original trans with 140k miles too.

btw have an 06 auto with 9k miles

Interesting; I have an 05 and an 07 and I'd have to say that the transmissions shift fine. Smooth and fast (relatively speaking).

My '06 doesn't really pause. I'm still getting the hang of doing very fast shifts with the Sport Shift mode; I blame the drive-by-wire. (My other car is a completely manual, carbuerated setup.)

Question: are you feeling this pause when you're doing a rapid acceleration, or a conservative Sunday-driving approach?

its a lot more noticeable doing regular driving. driving quicker, it will shift a little smoother or maybe its in my head.

I'm not sure if I'm feeling exactly what you are, but I do notice that the shift from 1st to 2nd isn't completely smooth. Maybe it's b/c there is a drastic change in gearing when comparing 1st and 2nd gear.

^do they tell you that or you ask them? when i drive people, i see their heads bob forward. I really dislike this, i don't think anything can fix this, except for a new transmission re-design.

i noticed that when it up shifts, the RPM drop really fast into the appropriate RPMs, but in my civic and other auto trans, it slowly drops into the appropriate rpms when upshifting which probably helps with smoother shifting.

i can shift my manual integra smoother than the tsx most of the time. lame

I never noticed this in my 04. I'll pay attention next time and see.

This bothered me for the last 10K miles (48K on car now), as well as generally degrading transmission performance.

I just had an axle seal replaced, which meant a transmission fluid change.

Problem solved.

Not saying it will be your magic bullet, but that's where I'd start.

I did a little experiment last night while driving home. Leaving the shifter in auto, I accelerated from a dead stop in 3 ways.

First way, I put the gas down with "clear intention" to get a move on. Probably what the car is meant and intended to be doing. "Yippee, vroom" mode, we'll call it. The tranny waited for a good healthy rev before going up. Shifted from 1st to 2nd at about 3500 rpm. Very smooth. (As was the shift from 2nd to 3rd.)

Second test, I was a bit more conservative, but still maintaining a smooth acceleration. Shift from 1st to 2nd happened at about 3000 rpm. Still pretty smooth.

Third test, I really did it slow and timid, with no hurry to get up to speed (as if I was in a parking lot, or watching something and not planning to get up beyond 15 mph). This time, the shift was at 2500, and there was a definitely sort of lurch, as the rpm dropped down a bit more in the 2nd gear. (Didn't note the rpm in 2nd, or the MPH speed,... sorry.)

Your experiences may differ from my experiment. But I'm only a tad disappointed that an "entry level luxury car" will sort of jostle occupants when you go slow and steady. I suppose if I wanted a limousine-like car, I'd get an TL,... or Camry, or Avalon, or Maxima, or....

That is similiar to what I've been experiencing. The change of 1st to 2nd gears only becomes obvious when during times of low RPM (-2.5k). When I manually shift , the unsmooth shifting is reduced significantly because my shiftpoints are usually above 3k RPM.

maybe you could ghetto reflash it, disconnect your battery for 2 hours and hook it back up and restart the 500 mile break in again... maybe its something with the ECU?

Try shifting manually at 2000 rpm, 1st to 2nd. The rare times when I do this, in a parking garage fer instance, the 'clunk' doesn't seem nearly as bad.

... Goofy when you think about it. That sport shift mode is handy in low gears at slow speeds. Woohoo, vroom vroom.

Mine isn't very smooth either. I attribute it to DBW and being a 4 banger (all my previous cars were 6s). It's annoying, but I've gotten used to it.
