Acceleration Problem

Hi All -

I have a 2004, with 108,500, 6 speed. Within the last two months, an annoying and hard to diagnose problem has developed. Whenever I try to accelerate (going normal speeds, not racing or hard launch from a stop), the car feels as if it is hesitating, but in a sporadic fashion. For those of you old enough, it's as if this car had points, and they need to be gapped!

Under a higher rev (i.e. >3000 RPM) launch from a start, or downshifting (so the revs go higher), this "hesitating" is not apparent.

To date, I've run a couple of bottles of Chevron Techron, and changed the VERY expensive air/fuel ratio sensor (the one in the cat). None of this has been effective

Has anyone experienced this problem?

If you have never had the injectors professionaly cleaned I woudl suggest that. Maybe your cat is plugged.

I've never had the injectors cleaned professionally. This is something to check. Thanks. I don't know about the cat being plugged. I am also wondering about the throttle position sensor, too.

could be the APP (Accelerator Pedal Position) sensor starting to fail - does your car hesitate while cruising at lower-ish RPMS?

My 04 hesitates while cruising at constant speeds .. only during lower-RPMs and it's not everyday.. from everything i've read and tried out.. i've narrowed it down to the APP Sensor.. there's another thread on here too from a few days back that details a similar problem to yours and mine...

There are more documented cases in the TL forums that i've read as well

The symptom does occur at the lower RPM's and is daily, repeatable and annoying. But, there was no code! I wonder why. I'll have to check the APP sensor. Thanks for the help and the link to the other thread. I'm going to read it now.

One more thing, when I'm on cruise control, there is no "hesitation". Like the one post said (the other thread), does the cruise control bypass the APP sensor?

Yep! That was my post I think... the APP sensor measures the position of the accelerator pedal only (via a cable that travels into the sensor).. so if you use the cruise control, the speed is controlled electronically. Hence nice steady speeds w/o hesitation when I use the cruise vs me doing it manually.

Here's another thread from the TL forum that sort of describes your problem exactly, I'm thinking more and more it's the APP sensor

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/replaced-app-sensor-today-817806/

Good luck! and let me know what you find out, as i'm curious myself! though i'm 99% sure it's the APP sensor causing my problem.

Cool! Thanks for the head's up. Unfortunately, I'm on business travel for a month, and I won't be able to get to the car during that time. But I'm REALLY curious about the APP.

Not that this is a good play on words, but I didn't know that my TSX has an APP (like my Android phone)!

Got the APP installed (my brother-in-law owns a shop). He told me that the "hesitation" is gone, but he's going to go on a longer road test. Looks like your solution was 100% money!

Can't wait to get home and drive it!

Thanks!!

Hi to all. I couldn't find the introduction thread, so I thought I'd jump straight in here.

My question is about acceleration and this thread seemed to fit my needs.

I'm in Australia and I just bought an '05 Accord Euro 6M with 56,000 miles. I find the acceleration to be difficult from a standing start without sipping the clutch. The car starts to take off and then seems to drops revs and then keeps going again. It's also very difficult to drive the car at low speed - it just seems to lurch around

I'm trying to figure out whether it's just my driving or if it might be the APP sensor.

Do my symptoms fit with other diagnosed APP sensor problems.

I'm keen to ask here before I try to buy one, because the APP sensor part in Australia is $300.

cheers to all

Hi,

Actually, there is a link in an earlier post in this thread.

Your symptoms seem almost identical to those that were plaguing me. The change of APP sensor (according to my brother-in-law) has cleared the most of this problem. I was told that if abruptly hit the accelerator (while in 1st), that the transition was not very smooth. He described this solution as 90%.

Given that, there may be something else with my car, and I have over 108,000 miles.

The price you paid, given is on the expensive side. I paid $184AU.

Cheers, gkkitag

In first gear at sort of walking speeds or a bit faster my car just bounces along. I have to put in the clutch to stop it. It's kind of embarrassing in parking lots. I must look like a learner

We get screwed on parts regularly. eg. I bought new wiper blade inserts the other day for $15 each ($30 the set). The same blades would cost you less than $11.

There are some great benefits to living in Aus, but cheap car parts aint one of those benefits.

I'm doing up an order for oemacuraparts.com who seem happy to send parts across the water.

G'Day OZ_Rob -

Sorry to hear about the prices. Wow! I haven't been in Australia in six years (was in NSW, staying in New Castle). Had a good time. Glad to hear you have a parts supplier.
I've got one more part, then I'm done (until the next time). I want to get the folding side mirrors.

Hey guys...thanks for sharing the APP issue problem and resolution. That is very good to know for us with 04's and all these cars that are starting to get "up there" in years.

The problem I've quoted though...sounds more like the checkvalve in the clutch. Making it so that you have to baby the clutch in 1st and 2nd so it's not super jerky. I've been driving manual hondas for a long time and before removing the checkvalve...I seriously wondered why I was having such a hard time.

I'm glad you hada good time here Yeah, parts availability is good but the prices are high, but through the power of the internetz, we can fix that ...

I'm wondering if there aren't two problems for me to work out. One is when taking off, I noticed that the revs drop when they get up to just over 1,200, which is as I'm releasing the clutch. The same thing when I'm driving along slowly in first or second the revs seem to bounce around.

The first problem could be the check valve, but the second one has the clutch already engaged. The alternative is that with the high compression it doesn't like driving really slowly.

Has anyone else got a manual they can comment on slow speed (walking pace or a bit faster) driving?

I've autocrossed my car a couple of times, and don't remember this happening. Possibly because I launched at slightly higher than normal RPMs. Normally, I drive like the old man that I am, use the cruise control, no jack rabbit starts, etc. No problems.

I've been driving manual for a long time and the TL made me feel like it was my first week again...jerky as heck if you didn't pay really close attention to the gas you were giving in relation to clutch release. Took checkvalve out and BAM...car drove the way I expected. IMO, it's a must for all 6MT.

Glad to hear the APP sensor solved 90% of the problem! Where did you buy your part?

How much is the APP sensor in the United States? For those that have bought it, did you get it thru Acura or aftermarket?

I believe my brother-in-law got it from the Acura dealer. I'd have to check to be sure.

I'll have to check this out. There are a lot of places on "the mainland" that will not ship to Hawaii (for a variety of reasons - some not even USPS). Hopefully, this site is not one of the "Sorry, but we don't ship to Hawaii or Alaska" places.
