AC Smell

Got some warm weather around NJ for a day or two and I kicked the AC on for the first time this season. I got this terrible musty/moldy smell coming out. Anyone know what I can do about this?

I agree, I got the same thing yesterday when I turned mine on. I figured it's just something that happens to cars because my last cars have always done the same thing. I wonder if it's from mold growing on the evaporator coils due to the humidity condensing on it?

You just need to run it for a while with "recirculate" off. That'll fix it.

It's the AC condenser, I think, that has dirt and stuff build up on it. There are products on the market you can use to clean it from a plug under the hood. This usually results from the moisture in the air.

Ask for an "Airco-cleaner".
Destroys bacteria, mould, germs etc............
Take care --- remove your pollen filter!!!!!!!!!!!! then aplay the product.
Afterwards, your put the pollen filter back in place ofcause.

Spray some Lysol in the outside air intake for the A/C. That'll actually kill the mold.

And follow the advice of the above post. You don't want to saturate your pollen filter.

First of all, hurray to me for guessing the evaporator coil. But I guess I cheated since I work in the HVAC industry for a living.

Second, is the air intake the vents that run along the bottom of the windshield?

pollen filter

OK it looks like I have the answer.

One question. How do I remove the pollen filter before the Lysol?

Someone has a post on this, but you drop the glove box and remove the filter holder... it is directly behind the glove box. Push two tabs in and pull out.

Will turning the heat to the highest setting from half to a hour do the trick?

I sprayed at the base of the windsheild where the AC intake is. Worked like a charm.

You guys are the best.

The heater side of the system is beyond where the cooling side is. Normal temp air is brought in and sent to the cooling section or the heat core.

Besides, mold likes warm and dark spaces.

Pollen filter removal:

To replace it:

1. Open the glove box, and remove it's contents.

2. Push the stop on the right side of the glove box to detach it from the glove box.

3. Remove the side tabs by carefully prying them out with a screwdriver, then pivot the glove box out of the way.

4. Push the tabs on the corners of the dust and pollen filter case. Pull out the case.

5. Remove the filter from the case.

6. Install the new filter in the case. Make sure the arrows of the "AIR FLOW" marks on the filter point to the air flow direction (downward).

7. Install the case. Make sure both tabs "click" into place.

8. Install the glove box stop and side tabs, then reinstall the contents, and close the glove box.

Sounds easy enough!!

Do you just spray all along the base of the windshield? BTW does anyone have any pix of where to spray?

Its a plastic grill right at the base of the windshield on the drivers side. If you crank your ac, with the vent open, you cant miss it because you can hear/feel the suction.

I hope you guys are covering up the vents, cause I imagine the lysol will spray all over the leather seats.
