5AT Tranny Failure

Not gonna post too much about this untill I know whats going on...But w/ 15,000 miles on the car the Transmission is shot...Tranny fluid was black... so something went horribly wrong...Might drive hard from time to time but that car was babied... so I have no Idea what the hell went wrong here...

Driving down the Freeway at 60mph, go to Tiptronic mode to drop to 4th gear to pass, all of a sudden w/ minimal force 4thgear redlines, without any acceleration, shift up to 5th like what the hell, and realise the cars still not responding to the gas, make my way over to the side lane, put on the hazards and coast as far as I can to the next exit, make it half way restart the car and start moving in first for about a mile, then it stops working again...all of a sudden the car starts nutral dropping itself, jerking around like crazy.....finally made it to a getty station where I check out the tranny fluid (figured i was low or something ) and its black, guys like shit...we Call up Acura Service..and an hour later they towed me over... They said there probibly gonna get a New AT and put it in there...Its a complete closed system so they dont even want to attempt to fix it... Im so pissed i just want my tsx back...

So I dunno why it happened, cars never been Nutral droped or anything that would dirrectly affect the tranny in such a way to lead to this...Esp since the Car hasnt been driven in a month before I came back home for holiday Break...

5AT guys...just go get urs checked out or something...no warning signs, felt fine lastnight/this morning...

on a More positive note..they said even if they need to replace the Transmission, I should hopefully have the car back a few days after new years... guy said Acura should have the tranny to the dealership w/in 24hours of when they order it

Man, that sucks. Acura is good at taking care of you with stuff like this. On my brothers TL, they had to replace the entire AT, I forget exactly why...

I only have about 680 miles on my new baby so I haven't really had fun with the SS...yet

May I ask what's your build date?

This sucks. I thought faulty auto transmissions were confined to the V6 Hondas and Acuras. There are TONs of people with failed auto transmissions in the TL, CL, and Accord V6 forums. Hopefully this is not a trend that extends to the TSX.

How do you determine the build date of your car? I can see the month/year on the door sill but there seems to be a way that some people determine the exact day the car was built. Can it be determined from the VIN or something else?

oh sh*t, i've been noticing the vibration at idle as well; it's not too harsh but i can feel it sometimes. i've got about 25,000 miles on the car and it hasn't been 1 year either.

I am putting together a list of issues i have with the car so i can have my service rep take a deep look into this.

i might have the dealer do a power-flush on the tranny, not sure if this will help with the vibrations.

I wouldn't get too worked up about this, hopefully its a just a random failure. The car's been out 1.5 years now and there have been very few if any other AT failures

The month is the most detail you can get without going into Honda's database for exact day - would probably need to get info from factory. It would be interesting to know if it was an early build car.

vibration @ idle is more of a characteristic of a 4cyl.

hmm... is your car vin in the range of the defective transmissions?

Hey guys...

Im on my way out the door right now...Ski Trip that had been planned a while ago...so I cant get out of it now...Still pritty bummed about the TSX but they said it should be fixed a few days after newyears...Dont know the vin/Build date off hand...but the Car was Delivered to Acura on July 7th 2003...Between being a kid and going away to school I havent put too many miles on it...I found that defective casing thread and Im hoping that thats what happened...But I never got a letter from Acura so Im guessing im not in that VIN range...besides that though, I dont know what the hell could of happened..I just want my damn car back...Ill tell everyone as soon as i get back and find out more information

The tranny casing would not cause this. Since the oil was black something was going wrong for quite some time - it just happened to let go when it did. With that delivery date it's a pretty early build car - most of the reported AT problems seem to be from those early cars.

Yet another reason to shy away from first year model (or at least early build) - regardless of who builds it. A few early issues like that cropped up with the RL also.

There haven't been enough to call this an epidemic. Let's just relax and see what happens.

I wouldn't be surprised that he overheated the tranny, and the fluid started boiling. Of course, you don't have anything left in your AT then.

Happenned to me once. I coasted right behind a truck to give the tranny a break, and tried to feather the throttle until I was home. I changed the fluid (which was pitch black and smelled like shit), and gave it another 300,000km.

Me three...I've been noticing it the past week. Idles a bit rough but it calms down if I drop it into neutral.

I'm going back for another service issue next week so I'll have them give it a look-see....

Just got home from my Ski-trip...my ICELINK was sitting at my door...hell of a timing for that one..but whatever trying to convince myself that that car isnt my whole life lol... Well anyway Dad called acura and really didnt get anything from them so yeah.. and in responce to Sauces and Bikers posts... how then would u supose that I managed to overheat the tranny...cause Its beyond me at this point... Unless I was driving around thinking I was really Memphis Rheins and Nutral Dropping it at every intercection cant figure out how i could blow that tranny....

And to Biker: Personally Id shy away from early build cars myself...however I was splitting the cost w/ my parents and they had the final stay... Lost the battle on the Mustang GT/V6 Accord 2 Door...so it was the TSX or the Xterra...very happy I went w/ the TSX... not that it was my last resort really...Just perfect timing for its release...

Converter gone maybe?

Random question but why not just mash the gas to pass rather then go into ss?

No resale should be fine, you have a new Honda tranny...plus you don't have to tell the buyer it has a new tranny....you are not under obligation. Only if they ask.

My AT tranny was replaced at 5K. It was making a whining sound. The said they thought it was probably a bearing that went bad. I had it replaced before it left me sitting on the side of the road, but if I had left it go, it may have ended up the same way

From what I can tell are we the only region that gets the SS-AT?

Australias Euro Accord doesn't have it, I think I have looked at others as well that miss it too. Is this an Acura only option.

This is likely because Americans somehow have made this a must have feature on their cars. I think that if American licensing rules were stricter and required the learning of a manual transmission, we likely would see more manual tranny cars available and far fewer SportShift automatics.

"Internal Transmission Failure" ? WTF does that mean ? that's BS. If I were you I'd demand a more detailed descrition of the failure. like exactly what part of the tranny focked up.

same type of thing happened to my friend with an 02 CL type S 5AT. Acura gave him a new tranny and a 10/100k warrenty on the new tranny. I'd ask for the same warrenty from Acura for your TSX.

hmm you know i don't think they opened the tranny up so they have either zero or little idea what really is wrong. They will definitely charge Honda for this job and will most likely have to send in the tranny back to factory and let the "real" tech have a close look/.

I'm not trying to be little your experience but WOW! I wish I had a TSX at your age, hell I wish I had an Accord at your age or a Civic.

Let's see I had a 1984 Dodge 600 (K-car) with a bagillion miles---POS! Then I replaced it wtih an even better car? A 1968 4-door Dodge Dart slant-6, I was Al Bundy cool!

You have a TSX, at your age
Having automotive standards this high at your age...man, your life is gonna suck if you ever have to settle for a lower car.

At your age...you are my hero! I had plenty of weeks were my car wouldn't run but it wasn't at a dealer it was in my driveway.

Attcually I paid for half of the TSX... I realise I am very lucky to have a new car and belive me that thing has been babyied its whole life...which is why the tranny problem baffled me, there are allready PLENTY of threads about kids getting TSXes...Id rather not turn this thread into one...dont really feel like arguing, just want my car back.

Also im not spoiled...im more then happy w/ the TSX...but i would of been happier w/ less...

Well, on the bright side you getting a brand new tranny and dumping a 15K mile one. Could have just been a defect that slowly got worse over time...
