Your passenger seat has a sensor in it, and will only go off if the sensor sees that someone is in that seat. No reason for a passenger airbag to deploy if no one is in it.

The side curtains and torso bags ONLY deploy on the side the impact happens on, assuming there is a passenger. (the driver would of course have to be there). The frontal airbags ONLY deploy in moderate to severe front impacts.

Any questions?

(This is how they are designed. There are some exceptions.)

Hahaha :-P

The impact was from the side so having an airbag go off in front of you isn't going to help at all. In fact it would be worse because you're likely to have bruises and friction burns when an airbag deploys.

I think she's talking about the driver side -Side curtain airbags... I think if there wasn't that great of an impact that would've caused the driver to violently hit the driver side from whiplash, they won't go off.

If you think about the physics of it, when the car gets hit from the passenger's side, the driver will stay "in place" while the car "moves" to his left (all relative, and amounts dependent on speed of impact of course.) Assuming the seatbelt is being worn, he'll stay in his seat, and not flop around the car.

It would be amazingly stupid for the front bag to deploy in this situation.

It would be equally useless for the side bag to deply, as he's already moving away from the side pillar.

If for some also amazingly stupid reason the driver has chosen to not wear his seatbelt then he'll be receiving some rather unfortunate injuries.

The airbags go off when an accelerometer at one point (front bumper, etc.) accelerates at a different rate than the accelerometer in the Airbag ECU on the tranny hump below the radio.

Based on what I see here, with no passenger, and no serious side penetration, I'm not convinced that the airbag should have fired.

If the side airbag had fired, his ears would still be ringing.

Glad you're OK, man... had a flying tire hit my driver's A pillar a few years ago. Strongly recommend fixing your car and trading it in...

Actually, I just got rear-end and got pushed the car in front of me . The passenger's front aribag went off with nobody in the seat but my driver's side airbag didn't go off. Couldn't figure it out.

I'll post some pics as soon as someone can show me how. They don't look good at all!
