This is a hot mod. Looks good, definitely something that I want to do. All you got to do is do something about the trunk like everyone else suggested.

WOOHOO!!! My 100th post!

Dude, that's awesome. Thanks for the write-up. Think your friend would be willing to fabricate a few more of the custom pieces sometime in the future? I'd pay for the work, of course, but that'd be awesome if I should decide to get a navi in my next car. I'm sure there are plenty of people who might be thinking of trying this too now that they have an idea of how you did it.

Thumbs up

Very nice job. Props to you. I actually was going to do something very similar, but I knew with all the available hardware I was not going to get the tsx touchscreen to work with the carPC. I also wished that it used a more direct video out (instead of TV out) for sharper pictures.

Have a good time with your install, and keep us updated with pics when you have everything tucked away nicely

I've been outta the game a long time Podacter, I remember this from way back. Great job and nice follow through. Are you planning on adding the backup camera now that you have most of the equipment?

any regrets buying it?
I am very happy with the unit, it does what its supposed to. if you want video on the navi then its a good buy...the TV tuner functions arent as good because UHF/VHF need to be stationary, and a moving car isnt stationary. But i've rarely ever used that function anyway. its great for DVDs and such...

i am thinking about doing the commander also, along with the av-electro. kit.......

any advice?

Thumbs up impressive

I am totally impressed. I build PC's on the side, I have my own little company and have much experience with networking and such. I never knew this could be done with NAVI's. I just got my TSX w/ NAVI in January. You definitly have me wanting to do this now..... What functions do you use on the CARPC, and how can you switch from the NAVI view, to the PC view? Thanks for the info.

There is a simple toggle switch that comes with the TV Tuner and it allows me to toggle between the nav and whatever other video input is being played...i.e. DVD, PS2, computer...

The only funtions i really use are for playing mp3s and occasionaly DIVX movies or music videos. Not much else really. With the wireless card you can go hunting for wireless access points/networks (wardriving).

The other project i might do is get an OBD-II connector to plug into the cars diagnostics. This would allow me to view things like gas milege, speed, rpm, engine temp, etc in real time and maybe somehow use that for something useful. I'm not really sure how. But you would have access to every parameter that the car's computer puts out reads. I guess i could diagnose if/when the check engine light comes on (hopefully never)...

That might be overkill though, but it is possible

Oops i forgot about your post...You should get the SHOND3 aux input, although the avelectronics unit has fm modulation. But it sucks. Thats really all you need man. I am not sure what you want to do - a computer? Then obviously you would need that as well. the main thing you want to do first is get the avelectronics unit installed and working, then you can hook up what ever you want to the nav.

Well at the moment I have the RCAs from the SHOND3 inside the car, and i manually plug which ever input source i am using into them. But i am going to get some kind of Y splitter or whatever to plug both in at the same time. to be honest i havent quite worked out those details yet...

Wow... I am just floored. If I could find someone to do a pro install like that for me here in SoCal, I'd definetley get it done.
I wouldn't do it myself, however. I've definetley made a few computers from scratch - but I wouldn't to go around messing with my $27K baby.

Does anyone know any PROFESSIONAL installers and how much it would cost to play DVD's or hook up a PC to our Navi screens?

I am very interested in this option, but don't want to mess up anything

Thanks!

The Navi conversion is very easy to install yourself if you've ever done any car stereo work. Otherwise just about any reputable shop in your area could do it.

The original post was back in 2004, and that's quite a long time for pictures to persist on the dynamic web. The original poster no longer has a personal website through comcast.

With some research, you guys could have found the thumbnails here: http://bryon.sommers.net/photos.html

Apparently the regular-sized pictures were on the original personal website, so I'm not sure if they've been lost. In that case, http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windo...ertoys-xp.html will be of use (search for the magnifier)
