Blue Light Installed in Center Console - DIY
I didn't like how the center console had a dim yellow light and wanted
to match the blue ambient light.
So I.....
1. removed the center upper pocket
2. replace bulbs - # 74 bulb
3. Put back everything and now have a blue light that matches the ambient light! (well its stronger than the ambient light )
during the day :
at night :
to match the blue ambient light.

1. removed the center upper pocket
2. replace bulbs - # 74 bulb

Yeah you just have to slide it pocket out, the Helms manual says to hold on
to the bottom of the pocket, so I just put my whole hand in the pocket and
pressed down while pulling out, and it just slides out
There is a clip that holds the wires in place, so be careful when you detach
the clip cuz I broke mine..

Both are size 74 bulbs, so no modification is needed

Yeah I didn't realize I had a light in there till this year
I always had my hard cover case for my glasses sitting there,
so it was blocking the light so I didn't have a clue that a yellowish light
was there.

haha. same here. my glasses case probably covers it.
interesting. does the glove compartment take the same size bulb? if so, i think i'll do this. i was going to replace the door lights w/ blue LEDs, and get the white ones for the vanity mirrors and map light on the ceiling. i've been itching to do something w/ my car lately and all the mods i have aren't here yet. maybe i'll do this.

I did this last year also with the same Blue LED, but I ended up putting the whole cover back on with some foil to make the light brighter. It seems like you left off the button piece of that dome thing? It does seem brighter than mine but that maybe because of the picture or that you left the buttom of the base off? BTW good write up.

I left the bottom part off of the base

Is waiting in
i had this a while ago after seeing TSX420 do this, but it wasn't as bright. So i had customed a 7443 white led into it with a pressure switch, so if there was weight inside it would light up. It looked like a chandelier and was stupid bright. Took it out though when i put in my Alpine center channel

For those of you considering doing this, superbrightleds now offers a hipower #74 led. It's 6 lumens vs. the standard 2 lumens. You may be able to get the same brightness level as the original oem bulb w/out having to take off the little plastic shield over the socket housing. I haven't bought the bulb yet, but I will

How did you get the housing to look like this?

I like how bright it is for the compartment, but when you open the lid it becomes a little too distracting. I think I'm going to return it for the regular #74 led bulb that the OP bought. It's probably more subtle. For those of you who want a brighter compartment, go with the hipower 74.

Here it is! The blue #74 compartment light shootout. I don't have pictures of the hipower #74 led from superbright leds, but an explanation can be found below.
So. I purchased a regular blue incandescent #74 bulb (.99 cents) and a blue 1led #74 bulb ($2.50) from autolumination.com. I also got a hipower-xhp blue led #74 bulb ($2.49) from superbrightleds.com. All of these bulbs were put into the cubby box at the same time of night. So the lighting conditions are the darkest possible (making the lights seem as bright as they ever will in your car). Following taz98spin, I broke off the cover to the light reflector (the round piece with the green plastic diffuser on it). I even pushed out the green plastic piece and tried to reassemble the whole thing as it was without the green part. Verdict...without the little green diffuser, the light gets blocked off by the square hole the green diffuser fits in. Since we don't want green(!) I decided to take off the round black piece all together. Some good tape will keep your light housing in place. It's not very obvious. For those of you who are really DIY, you could find and cut a tiny piece of clear plastic to put into the hole where the green plastic was. I think it looks just fine without the diffuser anyways. So, the following are the pictures of what each bulb looks like. My final (and subjective) conclusion is that a regular old .99 cent blue #74 (non-led from autolumination) looks closest to the stock bulb. I find it to be the most subtle and least distracting when the cubby box is open. You be the judge for yourself though.
These first two pictures are of the regular blue incandescent (99 cents) bulb from autolumination.
These next two pictures are of the 1led bulb from autolumination. Note that it is significantly brighter than the previous bulb. This bulb won't "bling" your car when the box is open, but it does provide significantly more visibility in the compartment, if that's what you're going for. WARNING: The rubber mat is not in place in these two pictures. So it looks a little brighter than it actually is. Those bottom blue reflections won't be there when you put the rubber mat back in. I forgot!.
And lastly, I don't have pictures of the hipower (ledhp) bulb from superbrightleds because it is about %25 brighter than the last two pictures. This bulb really lives up to its hipower name. It looked much brighter than the rest of the blue lights in the car, and it made the whole box really easy to see in blue. Of course, to me this is kind of gimmicky looking. That's why I didn't even bother taking pictures So there you have it. Regular old .99 cent incandescent blue light for the win!
