Back from the cottage...

I had a really relaxing long weekend up at the cottage and even got up early one morning to do some photography.

Here are some shots from the trip:

First Light at Duck Point

Original File (~2MB)

Halls Lake Horizon at Dawn

Original File (~2MB)

Spotlight on Duck Island

Original File (~2mb)

And a candid shot of my baby...

There are a few more shots in the set:
/
If I ever feel like trading the TSX, one trip to the cottage is all I need to lose those thoughts. Carving the backroads at high speeds, clipping the apex of every corner for 60km, sitting back in supportive leather buckets and listening to the sounds of the K24 is just too good. This car is so well balanced at everything it does.

Compliments on your photography. What kind of camera?

Wish I had a cottage. Hell, I wish I knew where some were, I don't think we even have any here in Texas.

Great stuff Dan! I've become a fan of your pictures. You should have some good material in there for the contests to come in Ramblings.

The call of loons in the morning sure beats the sound of sirens.

Practice makes perfect. Just keep shooting and eventually your eye will tell you what works and what doesn't.

Too early.
I think it was about 5:15am and I was being attacked by bats as I was setting up for the shot on my beach.

All of the shots were taken with my Canon Rebel (w/ hacked firmware). I used my 17-40mm f4/L lens for shots 1, 2, and 4. Shot 3 used my 70-200mm f4/L lens at the long end of the zoom.

Texas is beautiful in a different way. I guess you could get a ranch or something.

Thanks again! If we ever have a contest where the theme is "Cottage" or "Wilderness" I'll be well equipped.
The last two contest I've had to go out and shoot for my entries, which I guess is good practice.

Thanks, I think I'm going to frame it.

Actually the cool thing about the 2nd pic is you can see it in the first pic about 30mins before I took the shot:

What a difference a few mm's can make

More than a few mm's Too bad your not eligible for the Canon employee photo contest going on right now. You'd be a shoe in.

Dan, where is your cottage again?

I was up at Balsam Lake in the Kawartha's on Sunday and god damn is that ever a busy lake. I felt like I never left the city

Balsam lake is very busy in comparison. I'm about 45min-1hr north of where you were:

Don't worry, breaking it would just give me an excuse to buy something new.

The two most useful features are FEC and MLU. Some of the other custom functions are nice but I haven't really needed to use them (1/2 stop exposure increments as opposed to 1/3rd for example).

The hack also allows you to enable AI Servo in all creative modes. Basically you can have it turned on and with the half press of the shutter it will continuously refocus as it should, but if you full press the shutter button it doesn't take the shot. You've got to track with the half press then quickly release and full press to take the shot. In other words, it doesn't work.

Here's the full list:
New in this release:
- ISO 3200
- Mirror Lock up

Changes:
- 'Left' button selects the autofocus mode:
PA-1 - ONEShot
PA-2 - AIservo (dosn't work right now)
PA-3 - AIfocusAF

- FEC is moved to JUMP button
- 'Right' button has no function assigned
- the default button in delete prompt was changed from 'Cancel' to 'OK'. So, be aware.
Now if you want to delete an image, press DEL button and then SET one. To Cancel press any other key."

You can download this latest version from http://www.cat.orc.ru/. Thanks Michael and Joey for the tip

Sure, get a tripod, come to the cottage, and get up early.

Certainly the camera can make a difference, but the A85 can still produce stunning photos.

This was done with an A75:

I would assume that I can get photos like that then with my Canon S2 IS. So how far away is toronto from rochester, ny, because that is where I am going to school this fall. Maybe I can come up and you can give me some help with my camera.

It's about a 3 hour drive but I'd be happy to meet up sometime if you want to make the trip.

those are amazing photos... I am speechless.

I want to get into photography as well as a hobby... Do I need a Digital SLR to take clean shots like that? and was any photoshop involved?

No you don't need an SLR, especially if you're just starting out. The camera is pretty far down the list for what it takes to make a good photo. Equipment wise, all you really need is a decent point & shoot and a tripod.

Read a few online guides about composition and lighting, then get out and experiment.

Some good reading material:

The Art of Photography: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/theartof.shtml (mostly focus on the "About Light" section)
