Window tinting

I got my windows tinted last Friday. When the tinter got around to the front windows he told me that he couldn't intstall tint up to the top edge of the window because of the seal. I didn't think anything about it and couldn't see a line with the windows up. I put the windows down last night for the first time. He stopped the tint about 3/4 of an inch from the top of the windows. It looks funny. Has anyone else had the same issue?

A lot of places do that so when you put the window up, the rubber seal doesn't slowly wear at the tint and cause it to peal off. If they are good, they will get it closer to a 1/4"-1/2" but they ususally don't ever go up to the very top of the window. This is what i have experienced with getting 5 cars tinted anyway. Your guy who installed it must have just played it safer...lol

That's about what you should expect man. My first car I thought it was odd too, but 3 cars and 4 tint jobs later I realize its standard. If they bring the film all the way up, it will flake and degrade over time. Just don't pick at it.

how about the base of the window? i've seen places put a layer of that fuzzy lining into some acuras. i guess it's to reduce the amount of friction for the rubber meeting the window/tint? i've also read that this procedure may slightly increase noise in cabin if you're driving along the highway.

Every car I've had tinted was done this way, with a thin line left untinted at the top. 3/4" seems excessive. My TSX has maybe 1/16-1/8" at the top. I'd get a second opinion.

This is probably the sixth car that I have had the windows tinted. I am used to it being close to the top of the window. I have had two cars (350Z and M3) that had windows that went up everytime the door was closed. The tinters had no problem putting tint on these cars. I never had a problem with the tint on them. I am going back to the tinter tomorrow and am going to talk to him about it. Thanks for all the input.

That fuzzy stuff is called Mole Skin. Some people use it and some don't. It is suppose to help prevent scratches on the tint.

Yea and all it does is get gummy and then rub off on in lines on your windows and you have to take a towel to it and rub it off. PITA if ya ask me. I won't be getting mole skin on my new TSX, just regular tint with a life time warranty

Yes, the FM antenna is on the back window, toward the top. I have regular black tint, nothing metallic.

3/4 " is way too much. It shouldn't go right to the edge, but 3/4" sounds excessive. If mine were that far from the edge there would be a region where light would come right through. Mine is set back about 1/16" If it really is that far from the edge they went too far.

The FM and AM antenna are in the back window. I don't think the FM antenna is a problem but if you put a conductive film over the AM antenna, it can form an electrical path to the defroster and that can effect your radio reception. This happened on my last car. On my TSX I had Formula One Pinnacle installed which is not only ceramic, but the film is non-conductive. I've had no impact to the AM or FM reception. You can ask the installed to place a piece of non-conductive film over the antenna before the tint goes down.

If the 350Z and the M3 had frameless windows, that would allow the tinters to safely get closer the the edges of the glass with less risk of fraying or peeling of the edges of the tint.

But, like Rocket_man said, 3/4" sounds like too much. Can you see where the tint ends when your looking at the car from the outside with the windows closed?

No, I can't see where the tint ends outside the car with the windows closed.
