What is the difference between a "muffler" and a catback exhaust?

hey guys,

What is the differences between a muffler and catback exhaust? So far I've searched and found that mufflers are the end pipe in the back that makes the vrrooom noise. And does mufflers give any performance at all?

A Cat-Back replaces all the piping and the mufflers from the catalytic converter back. Using larger diameter piping and less restrivtive mufflers, the cat-back can give more power.

Mufflers are just that - the can and the tip. Less restricvive mufflers can give more power as well in some instances.

The stock TSX already has a pretty free flowing exhaust, so neither a cat-back or after market mufflers give much power. I have the Comptech by the way.

tsx has a weird design, from the catback to the muffler, there are 2 tubes, one to the left the other to the right. One of the mufflers is welded with the tubes, while the other is bolted on, if I wanna change out only the mufflers, how would i come by doing that?

They'd probably cut the pipe near the stock mufflers and weld in the news one(s).

There should be a way to unbolt not from the muffler, but from more inward on the tubes, only problem now is... who sells only the muffler with the tubes... =|

you'd need to remove both stock mufflers. the one muffler to the left can be unbolted, but the one to the right is welded in. i wonder why honda did that in the first place...

Seems to me like a hella lot of work just changing the mufflers.

I would have thought the stock pipe would only be good for 30km's so you'd have to buy a new exhaust, cut the stock mufflers on and then re-weld the new mufflers on again.

Getting a full stainless cat back would save all that aggro so the initial outlay would be well worth it in the long run.

You can go to an Exhaust shop and they can do it for you. Alot of people get "custom" catbacks/axle-backs this way. You get to choose pipe diameter, muffler and possibly tip so it'll be the way you want. It's usually quite a bit cheaper than getting a ready made system, though the "coolness" factor may be lower as well. Because you choose the muffler, etc. it can be as loud or quiet as you want it to be, since it's mainly based on muffler size and type.

If you do this and they are going to be replacing any tubing that bends, make sure they've got a mandrel bending machine. Also you can ask for Stainless tubing as well.

I think I'm gonna save up for a full catback. all the cutting and welding gets on my nerves and sounds pretty ricey for my own taste. thanks for all the tips!

I am working on a custom exhaust to go w/ my DC sports headers. No Cat, true dual exhaust. I have to be primed for the CT SC.
