I would clean after winter since you get the salt and sand like we do in Ohio. Now I'm in a new development, so dusty environment, so I'll do Post-Winter and Mid-Summer. They say once a year though.

Yea I had a hydroshield on after winter for about 15k miles, and the hydroshield look shity as hell but the inside was clean just the oil from recharging last at 30k made it all black looking.

Air filters actually work a little better when they are slightly dirty because the bit of debris helps collect more debris. But to directly answer the question they say once a year but alot of it is opinion. I clean my K&N drop in ever 15K mi - 25K mi, or once a year really. I don't put a ton of miles on my car though.

Let me help you!
k&n recommends that the filter be a little dirty. Clean it whenever you feel the need to. I used to clean mine in a regular basis, but now I just do it when I feel like it needs to be cleaned and i'm in the mood to clean it...lol
