I would clean after winter since you get the salt and sand like we do in Ohio. Now I'm in a new development, so dusty environment, so I'll do Post-Winter and Mid-Summer. They say once a year though.

How many miles is this cleaning suppose to be done to these filters? I have had mine for about 5k miles already and it is getting kind of dirty.

The old school way to determine when to clean/replace an air filter is to shine a shoplight behind the filter. If a good amount of light shines through, it's still serviceable.

Air filters actually work a little better when they are slightly dirty because the bit of debris helps collect more debris. But to directly answer the question they say once a year but alot of it is opinion. I clean my K&N drop in ever 15K mi - 25K mi, or once a year really. I don't put a ton of miles on my car though.

k&n recommends that the filter be a little dirty. Clean it whenever you feel the need to. I used to clean mine in a regular basis, but now I just do it when I feel like it needs to be cleaned and i'm in the mood to clean it...lol

I just cleaned mine yesterday. I probably do mine every 10-12k, but thats only because I do about 9k a year and its pretty dry and dusty out here...
