questions on icebox

I know people have asked this question a million times BUT....I haven't found a decent answer.

My Comptech icebox finally came in and am planning to install this weakened. I have been reading / researching on what people had to say about "possibility of hydrolocking with icebox snorkel"

I have seen pictures where the snorkel sits (right next to the fogs and slight under) assuming slight rain drops will be evaporated by the heat. People here also mentioned something regarding , even if the snorkel is submerged , the hot air will be sucked from the comptech box lid into the manifold and to the engine. How much of all this is true????

My question: I live in New England and am worried about the heavy rains and snow fall. Just this morning, we had heavy rains and the visibility was 0.5 miles on the highway...and all that time while I was driving...this question popped in...."icebox hydrolocking". Once I got to work, I put my hand right under the carriage where the snorkel would be and it was really wet..."water basically came into my hands" IS the snorkel protected from underneath the carriage??

Please help.

I think the general concensus on this is that you'd have to drive into very deep water to have a problem. Rainstorms and snowstorms are not a problem. I too live in New England and had some of the same concerns when researching the Icebox, but I have now had it installed on my '04 for several months and during that time have driven in some VERY heavy rain with 1-2 standing water on the roads, and I have had no problem. This includes highway driving, backroad driving with large puddles, parking lots with large puddles, etc.

My two cents is don't worry about it and just go for it, you will love the Icebox and the way it affects the car's performance and sound.

My Question....

eeyore and minkl81 how would you rate the loudness of the iceBox compared to stock? Quiet =1 , Loud =10

example
INTAKE TYP------IDLE-----WOT
stock intake------?----------?
IceBox -----------? ----------?

I havent had the chance to hear an ICEBox in person. Injen is way to loud for me. I like hearing my music and passengers. anyone else with personal experience hearing the IB should rate the loudness too. I have read on azine that people say it is slightly louder than stock....just looking for some more info. thx

The reason you haven't gotten a straight answer is because no one can say for sure. All we can say is that if you don't drive through very deep water, the car shouldn't hydrolock. I've driven through, not by choice, some very deep puddles during hard rainstorms and I had no problems. I am using a CAI however, but the theory is the same.

I also am wondering one thing about the icebow, how often are you suppose to open it up and clean the filter? Oil change, tire rotation, 3-4 times a year?

No more often than servicing the regular filter.

the water would have to be higher then the snorkel at least for the engine to be in some sort of danger. and even though the water would be as high as the snorkel I´m still not sure if there would be any danger.
and when are you gonna drive through water that is as high as the top of your wheels?

The Icebox retains the lower portion of the OEM intake. If you look closely at the lower portion you will see 2 small air holes into the engine bay so hydrolock is highly unlikely.

I never hear my Icebox... but that is because my CT Header/Exhaust and RT Cat pretty much over power it.

Seriously, I don't think we have a single case of hydrolock on the forum aside from the person's TSX in Louisiana, but that is a different case.

I'd say:

INTAKE TYP------IDLE-----WOT
stock intake------2----------6
IceBox -----------2----------7 or 8

So literally, " a notch " louder. I can deal with that.

I just got my icebox in the mail today.

Do you really have to remove the entire front fascia to install it?
Is there an easier way?

I thought there was a DIY for the Icebox install but I can't find it. No, you don't have to pull of the fascia. If you jack up the front end, turn the steering wheel to the left and take the front left wheel off, you can unclip the wheel well liner and get good access to the intake piping. You can also unsnap some of the clips under the front fender and get access from underneath. If you don't have fog lights (04/05) you can also pull the fog light cover off the bumper. Check Post #46 of this thread to see how I did it.

honestly, just take off the front bumper, it will make your life a lot easier! It only took me 9 mins to get the front bumper off. And your going to want it off when you try to take out the resonator box, i had to use a little force on that sucker for some reason! Just take it off, it is only a few bolts and clips!
