Pulley

Does anyone know if any gains would come from a unortodox pulley. Do they have plans to produce one?

there will be some gains, but i'm not sure it's worth the price or headaches that may accompany it. Also depends on whether they offer an SS kit or just 1-2 pulley replacements. you're basically freeing up hp via lightened pulleys which take less energy to spin.

From my experience on my accord, the crank, power steering, alternator pulley set made a big difference on the low-end. the j30a1 v6 engine greatly lacked low-end torque and the pullies were a blessing. dyno-backed 15-20hp and 20lbs of torque whether it was a 98-99 or 00-02, however there were some shortcomings. When you run an aftermarket crank pulley, you have to be sure that the stock pulley did not act as or have a harmonic balancer. in the case of the j30, the engine was internally balanced and concerns over a rubber sleeve just quieted engine noise in the cabin, however there were stories of maxima engines where the crankshaft shattered bc of no harmonic balancer on the UR crank pulley. Another serious problem could also be the amount of underdrive the pulleys give. This concerns mainly the alternator which may not be able to sufficiently charge the battery. In the case of my accord, which came with a crappy-ass alternator, guys' alternators were dropping like flies at 20k miles. Couple that with the AEM pulley that undrove by 40%, and you have a load of cars that won't start or die in traffic. In UR's case the pulley set was underdriven only 15-20% which didn't really cause many problems. Other less severe things like belt replacements and belt squealing are things to consider. my belts squealed like a hyena and that was quite embarrassing. Another thing is cost...it's not that easy to install a pulley set, i'm not sure about the tsx, but in the accord i think it was a dirty job.

Overall, i don't think i will get another pulley set...the gains are not worth the trouble.

Gavin, yes it was a dirty job in the Accord, we had to cut slightly into a sidemount, because the pulley had an offset the stock pulley didn't have. And for the F22's there was a harmonic dampener, so no cramk pulley there, or bye-bye crank within a few 1000K's.

sauceman, wow that sounds extra filthy Having to adjust the sidemount sounds like a b!tch. I don't think the j30 required that, besides, i'm pretty much done with bolt-ons, however that injen cai looks mighty attractive!
