To LSD or no LSD....that is the question

Well, I'm getting some "surprise" tranny work done soon and was considering getting some extras while the flywheel and the case is open.

I've already decided I'll get a lightened flywheel.

I need your advise on an LSD.

An ITR LSD runs around $300 and I was wondering if it will be worth it with the power (or lack of) I'm putting down with R/I/H. My only experience driving a car with an LSD was my cousin's ITR and the 3rd gen TL. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see how either car behaved coming out of the turns.

Those of you with experience with LSD's: Do you think it's worth it? There's a possibility the TSX will see a few SOLO events a year, but that's pretty much it.

What do you think?

I would do it. You might wanna search clubrsx and see how the guys who have added LSD like it. There are quite a few people there who have added it.

Yeah, that's where I got the idea. I noticed a certain AZ member's car being shown off in the TSX section.

I can't believe how much bigger the RSX community is! Lot's of good K24 info is over there that isn't relayed over to this board.

I would do it for only a few hundred bucks while the case is apart. So what else are you doing?

Yes, I'm everywhere I'm even on MySpace now. Just got my account up last week. There's Acurazine and TSX owner groups on there. If anyone else is on MySpace, PM me and I'll add ya!

Replacing gears 2,3,4 & 5 with Type S or ITR. I'm undecided if I'll touch the FD yet. The guy that's doing the work did a bunch of Grand Am TSX's previously. At this point, I'm still trying to tone it down and not letting him talk me into doing a full race setup.

I guess I'm AZ's guinea pig for this. I'll post some feedback and refer the guy if everything turns out good. I'll try to get a baseline dyno when I get the chance.

edit: this was post #666 for me!!

Yeah, let us know how that turns out. Not sure how a base dyno would help with comparison, unless you are doing one WOT pull in each gear to compare the curves.

Are you from VA? I know one of the Grand Am teams is somewhere in middle Virginia. If your transmission work turns out well I'd be interested in a flywheel/clutch and LSD. My wife has it on her Cooper S and its really fun to drive w/, although its mostly good for laying down a streak of rubber.

What flywheel are you doing? I believe you need to switch out the OEM clutch to use an aftermarket flywheel correct?

Not necessarily. But for optimal performance, yes. Durability, no.

Black, congrads on getting the FW. At 300$, get the LSD done for sure. I'm sure you'll enjoy it and thank yourself for having it while auto-x'ing it.

I'm in Southern California. I'll make sure I post a video showing my RPMs while I'm accelerating.

I'm getting the ACT flywheel. Looks like it's certainly the most popular with clubRSX members and he could get me hooked up with one.

I thought it was a fitment issues, the OEM clutch pressure plate (?) won't line up w/ an aftermarket flywheel. Jtso probably knows what the story is

Never heard of that. Maybe such is the case for a K-series, but on my FW package (UR) for my 95 Accord, they specified better performance when mated with a Centerforce clutch assembly.

Turns out the centerforce was crap and lasted only 4 months.

i changed to the quaife unit which is similar to the oem( gear type) lsd.

i would rec. the final drive too..i think that singlehandedly made the car a new animal.

I believe the problem was trying to fit a RSX clutch onto the TSX flywheel. They don't bolt up and requires replacing the flywheel with a RSX unit.

go to some country roads and take some hard turns and use full throttle midway when coming out of the turn and see if you feel like your inner tire is slipping and see how the steering wheel feels in terms of torque steer. This is when you will notice the difference. If you don't really notice anything, then maybe the LSD won't be of that much use for the driving you do. I would do it for $300.

Do you drive an EP or TSX? If TSX, I'm really interested in your feedback on how the tranny behaves with the K24 powerband. It seem that all the K24 civics are using either the Type-S or ITR tranny due to mounting issues with the TSX tranny.

Do it...its not everyday you have your tranny opened up.

I'd say get the Comptech or Progress RSB right after this....both should help straighten out those corners REAL well.

On civics, the TSX trany won't fit in the frame unless you do some cutting on the chassis. I guess it's because of the magnesium case. BUt the Type-S tranny will fit well on a TSX chassis.

I already told him to get an LSD. Funny you mention the 'might as well...' They wifey was telling me about how a coworker got a boob job AND lipo.

I told her, "Well, she had the tranny dropped already. Might as well put in an LSD and change the flywheel!" She was like, "What the hell are you talking about?"

I remember you now. You're the one who got the CRV final drive. Did you change out any of the gears in addition to doing the excedy stage 2 clutch/flywheel?

Correct me if I'm wrong, your setup is:
- Quaiffe lsd
- CRV final drive (5.06)
- Excedy stage 2

Can you post a video showing the RPM band?

It looks like the LSD is NOT available anymore for under $500. Hondapartsdeals sells the Civic Si's LSD for $709. That's getting close to a brand new Quaife LSD.

Also, I found out the speedo will now read incorrectly. I wonder if I can just get it recalibrated somewhere?

So, I guess I'm in the market for a used LSD.

Has anyone actually installed a Quaife LSD into an MT TSX? My friend has, and is having VSA issues. He is wondering if anyone else had problems with VSA.

Thanks!
