Intake resonator question

hey guys, is there any advantage/problem/loss of power with removing the intake resonator? And how do I remove that? any pics and threads about that?

One reason is that I need some space for mounting the HID ballast...

Thanks guys

I just tried this and saw a gain by like three tenths 0to60 per my gtech. There is a couple of threads already started about this

all the intake resonator does is reduce the engine sound when on the high cam (vtec)

how to remove?

remove front bumper and unscrew the 2x 10mm bolt, then wiggle the thing around until it comes out.

see:
http://www.ct-engineering.com/store/...icebox2005.pdf

search on youtube for tsx front bumper removal instruction.

You'll see a gain of about 5hp by removing it, and it will be noticeably louder.

What you will definitely feel is the loss of torque from 2000 to 4000 rpm's. If you have to do it I recommend to install a velocity stack at the air box inlet, this will take care of the loss in torque and make your TSX just a bit faster.

Low end torque loss won't be noticeable with only the resonator removed. If you switched to a CAI you would notice it though.

I did just that and I can tell you that the low end torque loss is VERY noticeable, but by installing a velocity stack you regain most of it. The gain at high rpm's is barely noticeable.

i just removed mine today morning and i actually feel a more immediate throttle response and dont notice torque loss down low. I do notice it revs a little more freely and it sounds badass over 4,000rpm and sounds possessed (in a good way) above 6,000

sick! so i guess removing the resonator isnt a bad thing then? i will be removing my resonator soon also... but is it recommended to remove the resonator if the sound isnt a problem?

Yes, it's recommended to do it, especially if you want a more aggressive sound. You may want to pick up a velocity stack for the end though, if it really does help. Something like this

https://www..com/browse/cr/?fCategor...arch=&limit=25

you have to put clußrsx in the www..com part to see it

cool i removed my resonator and i love the sound makes me waste gas more often now, thats the bad part, but oh well, how much does the velocity stack cost? and where do i install it at? is it hard r easy to install the velocity stack?

Can someone clarify what you mean by velocity stack? Is this just the filter or are you talking about a whole new intake?

It's just a sort of funnel to bring more air into the intake tube on the bottom of the air box. It looks something like this:

so would the velocity stack go on a injen cai? like right between the filter and intake tube? or is this only for stock intakes?

I think that's how it's intended to work, yes -- between the tubing and the filter.

No no, this is before the filter. It wouldn't work for a CAI, only the stock filter really. The Comptech Icebox comes with one. It looks like this (but this is off a 2g TL)

I disconnected the tube below the airbox to see if I could notice a difference. I couldn't really, by the seat-of-my-pants, and put it back. It did seem louder, and perhaps I did feel the loss of low-end-torque...

What I did do is swap out the tube right before the intake manifold for a larger one (from a newer TSX model), and remove the cap from the stock inlet, which seems kind of restrictive all by itself. Sounds like trivial changes, but seems to make a difference. Oh, and an improved drop-in filter. Gotta be 2HP at least. ;-)

Seriously, I'm not sure if the larger pipe helped, but the throttle response seems better. I never feel like I have a "lag" (unless I'm in the wrong gear at low rpms, of course, but that's different).

(I'd like to add a velocity stack onto the stock intake tube, but there's not much room to work with there.)
