Increasing Torque Poll Thread

Hey guys,

A little up to my previous thread anyway as you may or may not know, my new rims are adding extra weight to my vehicle I am trying to free up some torque and responsiveness, I have narrowed it down to either a set of headers or a three piece pulley set. Which would be best for my 05 Automatic TSX?

If you choose other please state why.

What is a "Three Piece Pulley"?

Why would a "Three Piece Pulley" increase available torque?

I have both mods and I'd say DEFINITELY the pulleys, especially in any RPM below about 5K. They give a 5-10whp increase from probably 1500rpm and up... it's basically 5-10 constant whp across the entire range.

like i've said many times before, if you've got an auto tranny and an itch for some go power, the pulleys are a must

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I am going to be placing an order for a set this week hopefully thursday once I get paid, I was going to orignally spend the money on a front (oem) lip plus fogs, but who cares about aesthetics anyway, and ya 925, if you cut me a great deal I wont turn it down.

I highly doubt a under drive pulley set will free up 5-10whp. Probably 2-3whp at the most

Have you searched it has been discussed, if I picked up 925's headers swaped out the flex-pipe, would I see a decent gain across the board, or would I need to do this in conjunction with a high-flow cat, can anyone point me to the right direction of where to purchase?

i'd actually say the headers if it's between the 2. i'd imagine the gains from the headers would be more significant than the pulleys. but not to take anything away from the UR pulleys. they're great. you feel the car rev a little faster/harder.

of course if you want to really free up the air flow for more gains, the intake/header/exhaust/higher flow cat would yield some good gains. since you have an 05, this might be a good route to go to free things up since the 06+ have a little better air flow vs. the 04/05's.

I would go headers and High flow cat. Pulleys would be nice, but they are hard to install, and reading threads about removing the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) it could possible mess up your engine. I just pulled mine for my rebuild, and that bolt is on there good. It took me and two friends with a long ass breaker bar to break that sucker loose. I have never heard of headers hurting a engine, and even if the pulleys are safe for our cars, just that 1% chance of messing things up I wouldn't do it. Besides with the pulleys you better buy a better battery too, because that thing wont be charged like it is now.

I've read but dude no way in hell a under drive pulley will free up 10whp. You asked for help in improving low end tq. An CAI will free up high end power. Header might help you out in the mid range and top end. High flow cat will help in the top end but no go in the low end power. You wanted more get up in the low end since you installed heavy rims but those listed will not help you where you want. What people don't realize is that when you uncork a NA engine, it will help out in the top end but you hurt your low end power. All NA engines need a bit of back pressure unlike a turbocharged engine to be effective and have a tractable low end.

Get a K series stroker kit. That'll help with low end power. Bolt-on power adders will not net you much on a Honda. Its not like a Chevy small block when you bolt on a exhaust system and you gain 20-30hp

I did headers and it was def a better breathing car, then i got pulleys which made pulling more .

Plus i did a highflow cat and hondata. so if you want more power look at the route of hondata.

pulleys.

unfortunately, my first response would be lightweight wheels. but, i guess that would be a moot point...

My choice would be headers because they are probably a lot easier for you to install.
If you know how to install pulleys go for it and if you got the extra money.

Pulleys truthfully aren't that hard to install. Just have the right tools (breaker bar + some impact extensions to daisy chain the bar outside of teh wheel well), a strong jack handle to get leverage on the breaker bar, and some impact sockets. An impact wrench definitely helps with the bolts on the Alt and PS pulley (just use the old belt to hold the pulley while you blast it w/ the impact), and some patience.

Header is also fairly easy but will not really increase your low end at all.

its a pretty good deal as is considering the options.

Well if you aren't up for the fun and challenge, then pay someone. Personally I like the garage time -- it's "me" time away from my wife for a bit... LOL!
