Hondata - VTC Cam Timing

Is there anyone out there who has implemented the 45 degree VTC mechanism? is this mod comppatible with a standard Hondata reflash or no?

Nope, it's not compatible with the standard reflash. No one has it that I know of besides one user who was the test car for one of the Hytech setups with custom reflash.

Won't work with the standard reflash

The standard reflash will not advance cam timing by more than 25 degrees.

Yeah, there are a few out there, but the consenus says that it's pretty much worthless without a race header.

The two biggest stumbling block on this site are the cost of a race header and "practical" use of kpro.

While there are many swapped-K24's running either the RSX-S VTC or a machined TSX version, I believe only poster "Shaang" and Doug of Hondata are running one on the TSX chassis.

Of course, this doesn't include the Grand Am TSX's.

Out of curiousity, I decided to check how much it would be to buy a new VTC and send it out for machining:

Item #7 shows the VTC assembly which includes the sprocket.
14310-RBB-003 ACTUATOR ASSY., VTC (46T) 1 2005 Acura TSX 135.68 108.54

It's the same part number as the '06. I was hoping that it was a different version that had more than 25 degrees.

you can just buy an RSX sprocket.

I think the RSX is 50deg, right? May be too much advance, potential damage.

I would think that Hondata could customize the reflash for this, right?

I recall some people on k20a.org already have this setup on a stock k24a2 bottom end.

Just make sure when you set your VTC advance in your software to not exceed 45 degrees.

The stock ECU doesn't allow any more advance than 20 degrees of the VTC mechanism. Mine is a modified TSX VTC mechanism to 45 degrees, rather than a stock RSX one which has 50 degrees of play. Anything more than 45 degrees on stock 04-05 pistons and you'll have valve/piston contact issues.

Was that ever confirmed? I've only seen hondata speculate as follows;

"Allowing the full 50 degrees movement leads to a greater risk of valve to piston contact should you accidentally mis-shift and over-rev."

^ yea that's the only instance of a 45 degree limit I've ever read.

Maybe if the engine is tuned and the stock rev limit is kept it'll be a non-issue?

If it was me I'd probably stick with the 45 degrees just to be safe :p

Yes, I discussed it briefly with Doug himself when we were tuning my car. I also discussed this w/ John at Hytech when we modified my VTC mechanism. I'm still running it right now, but it only has 20 degrees of play... that is until I get k-pro.
As you may already know, John does a lot of the work on the Grand-Am Cup TSXs. I would consider any input from him to be SOLID.
