Good headlights?

Hey all,
Since my Accord doesn't have HIDs and I really want that look, what are your recommendations? I could get an HID kit online, but they are pricy and probably illegal. So I'm thinking of just getting some good bulbs. I want something bright but with a nice blue tint to it. What should I get? Silverstars? Phillips Blue Vision? What do you all suggest. Thanks

I had 03 accord coupe and HIDs are a way to go. I used to use silverstars but they become pricey when it is replaced once every three to four months. HIDs requries lump sum of money but considering its longetivity, they are worth it. Also it is much brighter with richer blue than those fake bulbs. Also installation is very easy. Just plug and play.

Aftermarket HID kits are illegal due to the fact that they move the light source ever-so-slightly in relation to the reflector. This causes the beam to go where it shouldn't, often into the eyes of other drivers (think of a Maglite that focuses the beam as you screw the bulb in and out of the reflector). The only way to do it properly is to buy projector housings for your car (I'm sure some exist for the Accord) and install them properly. Anything less than that is going to be a hazard to yourself and especially to other drivers. Please do not under any circumstances do this. Nothing is more annoying than driving in front of a car with a drop-in HID retrofit, whose badly-directed, retina-burning purple lights are blasting most of their energy straight into your rear view mirror.

Also, while the colored lamps look cool, they are functionally inferior to the nice crystal white light of the stock Acura HIDs. Bluer light causes more glare artifacts as it interacts with the cornea of the eye, and it also appears brighter to the retina than it really is, ruining night vision. This is why fog lights tend to be yellow/amber in color - because they reduce glare - and also why ships, planes, etc. use red interior lighting at night.

Get a full projector retrofit with some 4300K bulbs and do it the right way. You won't regret it.

Well, I found out that an HID kit should work fine with my stock headlights. The guy said the beam would be no higher, just brighter. He reminded me that older Acuras had HIDs in reflector-based headlights ( like the old TL) and they worked fine. My only concern now is whether the flash-to-pass feature would be bad for the bulbs/ballasts. Anybody know?

If you are replacing the high beams then yes, rapid on/off flashes of an arc lamp will shorten its life over the long term. This is why dedicated high beams use filament bulbs - bi xenon headlights do so by moving the bulb slightly, changing its pattern.

A word of advice about the old reflector HIDs- those reflectors were made to hold them. Remember what I said about the most minute change in lamp position having a dramatic effect on beam propagation. If you put a halogen lamp in a reflector designed for HIDs, chances are you'd either not have enough light to drive, or you'd blind somebody. It isn't that one or another is necessarily more dangerous, it's that one shouldn't be used with the reflector for another.
