Comptech intake purchasing question?

A shop that i ordered a BUTTLOAD of parts for my ep3 from

can do the comptech intake for 144 shipped

2 questions

1. is that decent?
2. does the fender have to come out?

i've always been an "aem" man myself but with the tsx i dont want loud and obnoxious AND i dont wat the risk of hydrolock with the flooded highways to my gfs!!

thanks in advance

I am installing mine today. I'm going to try to take enough pics as a visual aide for anyone wanting to go the fender/wheel method.

PS - I got the "bitch" bolt out last night in about 2 minutes. A 10mm ratcheting wrench is the only way to go!!!

a good price for a, ahem, bad product? if you want an icebox go for it, but its inferior to a CAI

Well, that's not fair.

It's not a bad product, it just doesn't give you as much benefit as a CAI.

Personally, I'm not going the CAI route, and will be getting the Comptech sometime this summer. Can't wait!

even a SRI is better, there's really no reason to choose the icebox other than sound.

I would say the lack of losing 5-10lbft of torque under 3k rpms is a valid reason. Most would disagree but for some it would play into reasoning.

You gotta back that up with a dyno meng. I haven't seen anything to suggest that big of a loss.

I think this is the best graph for comparison.

DOtted blue = dougs stock car
solid blue = taewlee with injen

While they are different cars you can see they overlay well. You expect gains with an injen of +10lbft from 3500-4500 and if you subtract that from taewlees curve it matches almost identically with the stock car. Regardless of absolute numbers in this dyno you can see how the torque curve is changed with an injen. Compare 2500rpms to 4500 rpms with an injen, you gain 20lbft. Stock 2500 to 4500 comparison is the same torque output. If it's expected to be about a 10lbf gain in the mid range with injen you see that there must be an accompanying reduction in torque on the low end to see such a huge jump. And it isnt' just this dyno, I can find more that illustrate a torque loss down low if you find this invalid for some reason.

Now don't get me wrong, I think the injen is a great mod IF: you are getting hondata(since you get it all back), you have an MT(because when cruising you are usually above 3krpms and in the "plus" part of the power band or want the midrange and top end extra power. With my auto and all the freeway driving i do I spent a large amount of time between 2500-3000 rpms(65mph-90mph) so having that extra torque to me is more valuable than the midrange gains. But i'm sure 99 percent of people feel that the gains are worth it in the other parts of the band.

I think there are still differences between cars that are exaggerating that torque loss but I could be wrong. tekn0mage's dyno starts just below 3000 rpm and you can tell there's a little decrease in power but there's not enough data to draw a conclusion:

In this run he already has hondata installed. Looking to see if I can find some more "only injen" dynos.

from vtec.net with the aem sri which I don't believe loses as much on the low end but doesn't gain as much midrange.

http://sohc.vtec.net/article_files/2...tovtsx_aem.gif

2700 rpms stock = 158 lbft
2700 rpms arem = 150 lbft

2700-2800 there is approximately a 5hp difference which equates to 155lbft stock and 145lbft with k&n cai.

Type X, so where did you get that price from? The best I can find is 150 + shipping and handling.
