Looking forward to seeing the pics of the home made version.

IMHO the only difference between the real Icebox and your version is the larger airbox on the Icebox. I think the larger airbox yields some additional throttle response as it has a larger, already filtered, air volume to draw on when you go WOT. The benefits you are seeing, and which will improve with the K&N, are form the increased air flow.

First time I've posted photos, and I know they're blurry but I suck at photography.

My car is also dirty (just got back from a bug-filled road trip) so pay no attention to the filth. The intake works great and sounds terrific, even my wife agreed. I wonder if the K&N will change the sound at all or just give me a little better airflow?

Sorry, that didn't work. Here's a link to my Rube Goldberg airhorn . Yes, I'm the only TSX owner with a drain-pipe intake. It seems to work well, though, and sounds great. Even my wife agreed!

I spent my savings (real or imagined) on a rear swaybar, so I guess they're not really savings but I'm psyched to get that. At least I'm not trying to build my OWN swaybar out of folding chair legs or something! Now that I think of it, hmmm . . .

That didn't work either. What am I doing wrong trying to post photos. I used tripod to host them, maybe that doesn't work?

I ran the Icebox for about 4500 miles and can't complain. It was quiet but yielded good performance. After going to the Injen with a Monsterflow filter, I really appreciate how deep and quiet the Icebox's tone was.

It's also worth noting the main strengths of the Icebox over a mandrel-bent CAI:
  • Slightly reduced chance of aspirating water (though this isn't ever much of an issue)
  • Throttle response of a SRI with the lowered induction temps of a CAI
  • Lower cost
  • Quieter
  • Car can be returned to stock with greater ease
  • Much easier to clean/change the filter on the Icebox

The link is messed up.

Here is the working one: http://peter-bigblock.tripod.com/intake_photos/

Nice work! I love the MacGyver aspect.

Thanks. I was a little apprehensive to post the photos -- I'm the only guy with a sewer-pipe cold air intake. But it appears to work great and it sounds exactly the way I want -- more growl at WOT but stock in daily driving.

I think my next project will be a supercharger from an old canister vacuum and some flexible downspouts. I'll let you know how it works out. I did order the rear sway and I'm looking forward to that. Haven't really wrenched on cars much in the last few years so this is about as much fun as a guy with a wife/kids/mortgage can have in Iowa.

I think my next and final mod will be a Hondata reflash. I should have taken the car to the local 1/8-mile track before starting mods so I can see what real difference my drain pipes are making.

I'll head down there and report back what I run.

That is a great idea, with the drain pipe, but if I can ask... why does it need a snorkel at all? I mean, what is the difference between that and just removing the resonator and letting it suck air from the fender area? Does having the airhorn increase the efficiency or something?

When I removed the resonator on my Prelude, it basically made no significant difference (as tested on a Gtech or by seat-of-the-pants), but it was louder.

I eventually got a "Type S" intake, which, similar to the Comptech y'all discussed here, has a larger box on the top of the filter, as well as a larger "box" rather than tube between the filter box and throttle body (is that the right terminology?). Of course, it's still not enough of a difference to be that noticable, but I could feel the improved throttle response, so the extra volume definately worked. I also think the smoother intake chamber (box) helped a bit once the air started flowing. Anyway, it sounds like the Comptech is similar in concept to the one I had on the old car, and fits my personality -- not TOO loud, to attract unwanted attention. :-)

The only think that might worry me is water ingestion, but I try not to drive through deep puddles anyway.

I honestly don't know why the airhorn makes a difference vs. just removing the resonator. Maybe it directs/smooths the incoming airflow? Sounds like the larger-volume, smoother box makes a little difference, too. I may eventually knuckle under and get the "real" Icebox and compare seat-of-the-pants vs. the drain pipe. In the meantime, my TSX has that throaty sound and is at least drawing cooler air. Plus, I'm saving up for a Hondata reflash, which I know will have a noticeable effect.

Ambient temps in the 90's and high humidity probably dilute the "cold-air" effect. My guess is the cold-air effect is greater during the winter, whether Icebox or drain pipe.
