does the VIS hood need to be cared for any different than a painted body panel? will they withstand winter months and snow?

you should never use a fiberglass hood in the winter. the salt will eat through the resin. I mean you would be able to make it through maybe one or two winters but everyone I know that has a carbon hood keeps there factory hood cause they put it back on when winter comes around. I was going to do that but instead I am getting a beater.

When I spoke to ViS, the coating they put on the hood, they said will be able to withstand most anything....they said unless something chipped away the clearcoat on the hood, it will not wear away anything, the ViS comes with the UV protection and clearcoat.

Like they would tell you, "Actually sir, our hoods are not meant to withstand the winter and the salt will slowly eat away at the clearcoat. We suggest you go through the hassel of keeping a stock hood and switching it out for the CF one during the winter"

But Colt is right... they arn't meant for the winter. You ever seen a CF hood with huge blotches on it? That's because they took it through the winter, parked in the sun everyday etc.

If it has a clearcoat, its the same protection that's on a painted hood. Salt isn't going to eat through the resin/cf if there is a clearcoat on top. On rock chips I could see that happening, but I wouldn't think a CF hood is any different than a painted one

well... because CF isn't painted with anything (like the OEM hood) you would see more damage when water gets under the clearcoat. With the OEM hood, to cause rust you would have to get through the clear coat and the paint which is a little harder. As well as CF fibers, from my limited understanding, can be broken down much easier then causing rust to an OEM hood.

yes with a cf hood rock chips dont become visible till about a year or so later when the hood starts to get those discoloration and things like that you see on your normal ricer who drivers his car during winter and doesnt change the hood. I mean you could get away with it if you whiped your hood off everytime you parked your car from driving anywhere cause the snow is not what is going to hurt it.

That would def help... and probably be a good idea if you paid $1300 for a Spoon cf hood or something. Protect your investment right

yeah i think if it was wrapped AND plus the clearcoat that comes with it you'd be fine through many winters. i've had clear bra on my front bumper and my bumper still looks mint. and that is through several winters in MASS. with all of those goddamn salt. sand trucks on the highway blasting it.
