Question Acceleration

hey everyone... im new to the whole perfomance scene. im actually a "all show, no go" type of guy, but i really would like to better my acceleration on the car.. so far ima just drop in a Injen intake.. but i've been told that torque is VERY important for off the line performance.. so i was wondering on how i can improve this.. since our car only comes with 160 pounds of torque. any suggestions?

BTW, Im engine illiterate, but im very interested in perfomance scene, help a brother out.

A set of really light weight wheels should help as well.

The intake will still help 0-60 runs because it produces more horsepower at higher RPMs. The torque loss from an intake at low RPMs is negligible.

Aside from installing an intake, the only limit to better performance is your wallet. There are two things that affect acceleration: weight and power. You can spend your money on reducing the weight of your car to improve performance or you can spend your money on increasing horsepower. Most people go the horsepower route because they don't like the idea of losing the comforts of their TSX like the heavy power seats. In this case, the first place to start is to make the engine breathe better on both the intake and exhaust side. After that you should get on the list to get a Hondata ECU upgrade when it becomes available in the summer. With an Injen intake and the Hondata ECU you can plan on saving 1 sec in the 1/4 mile. Figure on about $1000 for that upgrade not including installation and setup.

If you really want to spend big bucks you can look into getting a custom turbo setup made for you or even look at going to nitrous. But don't expect your car to be as streetable after these mods as it was when it left the factory. As you mentioned, you're not really engine literate so these two options may be more trouble for you then its worth.

As JTso said, lightweight wheels will also help 0-60 times. Although I'm sure you probably wouldn't part with your 19" Racing Hart wheels for a set of 17" racing alloys but there will be a noticeable difference.

Thas some good advice right there.. so making the engine breath is a the way to go.. intake/headers/exhaust... also after that, the ECU.. basically what is that.. im guessing a "chip" that controls v-tec? im sorry if thas completely wrong, but im tryin..hehe..

Now remember i have a automatic.. would the turbo be worth it on a Auto.. i heard superchargers are better for that transmission. but i guess it could be useful with the sport shifter.
This should improve a bunch, a 1,000+ isn't that bad for a mod thas gunna REALLY make a difference.. hope those parts are easy to get a hold of.

For now, ima make this baby "breath" starting with the intake (injen) next ima look into exhaust, tho i have no clue on which exhaust is good.. heard bout that fujitsubu.. but heard the power gains are weak.. then theres the comptech one that doesnt do much either... I thought exhaust made a big difference in performance because they cost so much.. why is a $230 intake giving a peformance gain of 10hp while a $750 exhaust is giving a performance gain of only 5hp.

For the rims.. i dunno, im in love with the RH, dont see myself changing those.. even tho, i KNOW it would make a big difference if i got some light weight 17's

Don't get caught up in the fast and furious thing. First off, the TSX is not a fast car off the line to start with, its not light and lacks low end torque which is necessary for those illegal street races that F&F ricers love. Your 19in wheels have worsened any launching that you would do, so you've done a negative drag racing mod already.

don't spend $1000 on your car for minimal gains that you might never realize w/ your setup (SS and large wheels). don't listen to someone when they say you need more low-end torque. go find out for youself! drive your car, drive friend's cars. learn about engines before you put down any $$$!

I put an intake on my TSX yesterday and love the added high end power. Might not win from the line, but moving it'll hold its own. The sound is great as well.

Tsex on 19s and ravingstylez you guys are obviously young (weird coming from me, I'm only 22). Search through the forums, there's tons of information on how to upgrade your TSX and what's good and bad. Search on google to learn what an engine does!

Yeah... thanx man.. much needed advice. ima see what i can do to make my baby go a lil bit faster.. its not like im tryin to make 10 sec quarter miles.. im jus tryin to get a lil more out of my car.. im more on the looks, then performance, im jus tryin to get a lil more go.. tho i understand the fact that my 19s are slowing the car down.. but by how much.. prolly like 10 extra pounds? im sure that wont make a HUGE difference.. and tho its not a stick shift, it still has go.. only .5 seconds slower.. so thas not REALLY bad either.. with all mods done to AT and all mods done to MT.. it wont be a HUGE difference in the end.. tho it will still be a lil slower.. i may be wrong.. but isnt that basically the difference.. only a lil slower..

Your 19" wheel/tire combo weighs almost 10lbs/wheel more than stock. Rotating mass is much worse than sprung weight. You actually use a 7x multiplier when comparing rotaing weight to sprung weight. So in this case 10lbs/wheel * 4 wheels * 7 = 280lbs equivalent sprung weight. That's like carrying around a linebacker in your car.

Are you sure the M3 comes with 19s???

Its a trade-off between a handling advantage and straight line accel. In the case of the M3, there is more than enough power to turn those wheels. Also just because they are big doesnt mean they are as heavy as you think. I woulnt be surprised if th bigger M3 rims are lighter that the 17s on the TSX.

To xizor: You dont need low end torque to be fast off the line or fast in 1/4 miles. Doesnt make a difference when you can drop the clutch at an RPM where you have the HP.

Yes, M3s do come with 19's, but they're also probably fairly light weight compared to most 19's you'd be able to buy on the aftermarket. Not to mention the M3 has a huge horsepower advantage to work with.

The M3 comes with 18's but 19's are an option. I've driven both and the 18's are a much better deal.

<-------- This one has 19's
