Yet again... Another non-navi to navi conversion ('07 to '05)
OMFG.. i have been waiting for this day.
Special thanks to "tuoncan" for his assistance and letting me borrow his service manuals
3 weeks ago, I came across a 8 month old 2007 Navi system for sale. Some guy must have crashed his brand new TSX fairly quick cuz the navi system were dated "Manufactured January and February 2007" for the systems. So now I have rigged it into my 2005 non-navi TSX.
all the pigtail connectors present on the navi dvd unit, but missing the navi display connector. So I went custom on that.
I paid $865 for it from a salvage company and they gave me 30 days warranty! The whole system included the 07 navi display, the 07 navi dvd drive, and even the MP3 attachment drive! I am not using the MP3 attachment kit, so it will be for sale if anyone wants it. The navi system had all the pigtail connectors EXCEPT for the navi connector. I had to buy a custom one for $55 like tuoncan did. The company said it did not have a navi disc but when I checked the DVD drive, well what do ya know, version 4.55 disc was in there!! =] saved me some bucks there.
I'm posting this cuz I want to give many of you guys confidence to do this! It's NOT that hard. But it will take you two days. One day to build the harness, one day to pull your car apart and put it back together.
2007 TSX Navi system - $865
Wires/cables/connectors etc. - $52
Custom navi connector - $55
Sub clock display - $285
DVD bracket - $26
GPS antenna - $89
-----------------------------------------------
Grand total: $1372
plus 1 day to build harness and 1 day to install.
It actually took me two nights for the physical install @ 4 hours each. 4 x 2= 8 hours so i'll combine that to say it can be done in 1 day.
The navi did not come with radio codes. I went to dealer with the receipt and the serial numbers and service center easily pulled the code from their computer.
As far as the install goes, it is the same as everybody else. Check "toucan" for his wiring diagram. It was fairly accurate, the pinouts did not change at all for the 2007 navi system.
Pictures:
Build the harness! Fairly easy, double check with volt meter to verify contact.
Figuring out where all the wires are and making sure the colors are the same
Pull everything apart and run the home-made harness.
Yes, gotta get that VSS wire.
I used these quick-tappers for the two can-bus wires..works very well. Tuoncan was very smart, you do NOT need to pull your cluster to get the can bus. Its EASILY available just right above the driver's foot!
Booting up! Drool.
Does anyone know, is this a good version???
Last but not least, the last owner left his address in the navi system. Because when I press "HOME" to route back home, the address is there! Anyways, are you on acurazine man!?? You should know who you are, you must've totaled your 2007 TSX recently and sold it to an insurance company or something.
I crossed out his/her house # for now. Torrance hrrm, 20 mins from my house.
Final Words
The first night I had everything hooked up except the CAN bus wires and the VSS wire. I ran out time. The navi still worked but performed erratically and it would update once every 30 seconds and it would totally go off like crazy. Then after hooking up the can bus wires and the VSS speed wire the following night, all was done and perfect!
My thoughts? The route calculations are extremely fast! I like how it mutes one half side of the driver speaker and then output a voice prompt. I don't like the start-up time. I also don't like the nag screen. And I don't like how the AC controls are now part of the interface, especially to increase air flow.
However, the map is big and nice, and the update rate is fairly fast and accurate. Satellite acquisition is fast too (20-30 seconds). And I can see that the navi screen will get dirty extremely quickly. Coming from a cheapo Garmin M3, this was a significant improvement.
I did not hook up the HFL because I already have a Parrot kit installed independent of the navi system. The parrot kit will override all voice/sound/music during calls.
So there you have it, it IS possible to put 07 system into 04/05 with fairly little effort. The pinouts are nearly the same and I suspect teh 08 tsx's are the same too.

Nothing but praise for anyone who can do this. Still seems too daunting for me to consider.

also.....as the OP has pointed out...your "GO HOME" address is in your navi....you should DEFINITELY put a password on the address book and the GO HOME feature. my dealer recommended that, and it's a brilliant idea.

I will post the mp3 kit later in the for sale section.
I am not sure if it is usable without the navi, I believe it is because it just goes through the B-connector bus on the stock radio (navi or non-navi). I will double check the wiring diagram but I'm almost certain it doesn't require navi because many cars don't have navi and they want mp3 too.
If anyone is interested let me know.

j/k, I was watching that auction but then I already had the navi display unit... but it's too good of a deal to pass up for an almost new '07 package.

you might sometimes find the dvd drive standalone on eBay. Probably only $200-300 only.
if you have trouble finding the connectors, it is not a problem than most people think.
The custom navi-display connector i paid was not worth $55. It was merely two 10x1-pin header stacked together to make a 20-pin header. It is probably worth no more than couple of bucks. So I'm positive, you can make those connectors if you want.
in fact, just to prove it to you, take a computer IDE ribbon cable. 40-pin. Match that up and you'll notice they pratically perfectly line up horizontally. If you could fine a triple-row (10 pin x 3) that would certainly be usable.

I have a 05 TSX w/ Navi but I can I swap out the 05 NAVI Drive for a 06-08 navi drive?
Someone else on the forum said that only the 06 Navi drive can be swapped into the my car not the 07-08 drives.

Also, isn't there another connector that I need to add in addition to the Navi display one, for the back for the Navi display unit, at least?
How about the connectors on the back of the DVD unit, do you think those can be made from those 'headers' you were referring to?

Good stuff! Now you have a better system than I'm. Enjoy your ride. Tell me if you ever figuring out how to install the voice command and the microphone. I ran all the wires to the front but never get a chance to sit down and do the installation myself.

Nice work! I was looking for a 06+ navi but then eventually gave up. I don't really want it for the navigation, i just want the screen so i can run dvds and whatnot on it. Keeping the OEM look is very important to me. Damn, seems like you got a good price on your stuff. Seeing this kinda makes me want to start looking again. Good job on the conversion.

I am still considering this if my carpc doesnt turn out as well and depending on how the guys trying to crack the bus system to use a factory navi unit for a carpc fair. However I will have touch screen something up front eventually.

the dealership would probably charge you over $4 grand just do it if they are willing to.
The navi drive and display unit alone if you were to buy from them is already $3500+ USD. Thats not including labor.

my navi was stripped from the vehicle and its not being covered through my insurance. so now im looking to get the harness or the connectors that run to the back of the screen. i found a website that sells at least most of the connectors, but im still missing like one or 2 of em. is there any way to see the photos from this thread?
