Why is navigation asking for a security code?

When I got into my car this evening and started it up, the navi immediately popped up asking for a PIN. Not realizing it was asking for the security code, I tried using the PIN I lock the address book with before reaching into the glove box and finding the radio security code and entering that.

It took the code, but why is it asking? I have not disconnected the battery or done anything to the car that would cause it to forget. All my previous destinations were still listed in the menu, so I assume it didn't lose power.

Does the navi interpret certain behavior as abnormal such as frequency of car startup or unlock method? The last thing I did to it was roll the windows up by using the key in the drivers door, which I rarely do.

It must have somehow experienced a loss of power, that's the only way/reason I know of that the navi will ask for its code. Second, did the radio also ask for its code? (separate code) If not, that would be truly strange.

Maybe it was lonely and in need of a little attention.

I'm not aware of a second code for the radio seperate from the Navi. I just typed in the code on that card they give you at the dealership and it started working again.

Had same problem wirh 2006

My 2006 has done the same thing after about week two of ownership. Likewise no obvious power loss or battery disconnect. It took several tries to get it to accept the security code. In actual fact since it would not accept it I went to my dealer, they had the same problem but after about four attempts it accepted the code. No problems since in four months.

Mine just did the same thing this morning. Got in the car to go to work, turn on the engine. NAV screen says "enter code". I enter it. works. Radio does not ask for the code. However, it did lose all the preset radio stations. This is strange. Why does it do this?

Seems like it lost power with Nav asking for code, and preset radio stations gone, but how come Radio does not ask for its unlock code then? And how could it lose power just parked there? I did not leave any interior lights on, nor headlights (has auto off anyways), and did not have any issues starting the car this morning....

Has people above exprienced this multiple times? or has it just happened once?

Happened to me once, I had to go to the dealer. Never did figure out why and I never lost the presets.

The other thing mine does is quite often the upper part of the multi function display doesn't come on when I start the car, I have to use the steering wheel or psh knob to get it to work. When the car was new it would always come on when I started the car if it was on when I turned it off. It happens about one half the time now.

Well, i had that problem once, when my radio was asking for the code. It happened when i plugged in a New Faulty Cell phone charger into the car....so i guess that blew the charger off, and the car battery got disconnected....so when i started the car the next time, it asked for the Radio code....

I had the same issue

I faced the same issue. I had the code, so entered it to make it work...but was confused why it asked me in the first place.

I could have never thought the reason maybe this - but after reading the various posts here it maybe - the only thing that I did different which I had never done before was open the front passenger window from the drivers controls. Could the car really be intelligent enough to recognize such a minor abnormal behavior....cool!!

This happened to me yesterday night. I started her up and it asked for the code. I hadn't done anything different except take the car to the dealer earlier that morning for an oil change (but I had run errands afterwards and there were no problems). So when it happened, I shut the car down and restarted the engine (it turned over as usual) - thinking maybe it was a battery drain, but it wasn't. I restarted the engine twice without problems. I wanted to see if there were other systems involved, so I armed the car and disarmed the car. I noticed that the driver's side door wasn't unlocking (the lock pushbutton on the door only came up half way). I tried this several times. The only way I could unlock the door was to use my key. After dinner the problem with the door unlocking went away, but my radio/navi still asked for the code. My preset stations still worked fine. I hadn't entered the radio code yet....I looked everywhere in the glove box and didn't find a sticker - just where is it supposed to be? (I have both codes on cards stored away).

I had this happen to me once in a year of ownership. It happened about 2 months ago. I drove my car to my gf's house around 6pm and parked it. Went to go home the next morning and it prompted me for the security code. Popped in the code and everything was fine.

Edit: my car is 2006

There are two codes, one for navi and one for the radio. You have to enter the radio code. As I remember reading from another user, the radio code is entered via the buttons, not the navi

my tsx did that-no reason-started the car one day and it was asking for the security code. The radio worked-no code needed for it- the nav code and the radio code have different numbers.

It's probably a bug and you should tell your dealer about this. I have the same thing on my 2006 Pilot too. I've seen other Honda, Acura owners complain too.

I got my car to ask for my navi code when I started my car, remembered I needed to unlock the glove compartment, and I turned off the engine to use the key. The second time it happened, I turned off the engine, and then quickly turned it back on.

Perhaps maybe it's a loose fuse or something?

And why do they put the codes there on the glove compartment? If someone's going to steal your stuff, they might as well steal the sticker while they're at it. And if the stuff can't be stolen, then why put a code on the navi and radio?

Im only prompted when the battery is disconnected.

Radio and Navi codes are separate. Radio code is punched in using the right turn knob, not volume knob.

Navi, is obviously done on the Nav.

My codes are located in my sunglass holder up top.

Wow, this just happened to me over the weekend. Navi asked for a password. I went to the dealership and got it. Didnt lose anything ether. They told me it's due to a power serge. Apparently this is normal. (As everyone can see).

I have the same issue only worse. My Nav will continually restart, and then sometimes it will get far enough to input the code. I had heard that sending to Alpine for a refurbishment will fix it, but this thread seems to indicate a drop in power. Has anyone figured it out?

Mine was doing this when I first bought it. The positive battery cable was a little loose. I think maybe the other systems are equipped with a capacitor for intermittent (extremely small interval) power losses. The nav may not have one.

This is just a guess.

Either way, I tightened my cables and made sure they were clean, and it has been problem free for almost 2 years now.
