When to SMOG?

When to SMOG?
I will have my TSX for 2 years in June...
My question is, when is the first SMOG check due for registration in California?
I know that SMOG checks are done every other year for registration purposes.
I received my registration renewal in the mail and it just told me to pay the fee...did I luck out or do newer cars not need SMOG checks as often?
