When to change transmission fluid

My 05 TSX (automatic) has ~38K miles on it. Can someone tell me when I should get the transmission fluid changed? The dealer quoted me ~$150 when I went there last time for oil change. Can I get it done outside for a cheaper price? What is a reasonable price for it?

I am sorry if this question is already asked but I couldn't find it.

Thanks in advance.

i switch off from a "drain and fill" and a flush every 20k miles.

Drain and fill = drain the transmission oil and then top it off with new transmission oil

flush = drain the transmissin oil and then top it off with new transmission oil. then idle the car for a little bit and then repeat the drain and fill a few more times

A "drain and fill" will not get the transmission oil out from the torque converter and thats why the flush is done.

$150 seems like a good price for a flush because you need a lot of oil in order to do it. For a simple "drain and fill" $150 would be a rip off. hope that helps

Owner's manual says either at 120,000 miles or 6 years of use.

^^I wouldn't wait that long. I've been doing a drain and fill every 30k, and will probably flush it out next time.

Guys:

Am I reading the owner's manual wrong then??

The first mention of a transmission oil change occurs at 120000 miles or 6 years.

I don't know if you guys have the manual and can recheck it. Come to think of it, i dont think it is the owners manual itself but the maintenance booklet that they give you together with the owner's manual.

I also have a 2005 TSX.

Like you guys, i also think that is too long but that is what official Acura literature states.

I think I saw in the owner's manual "3 years or 60K" with heavy driving (or whatever it is called). When I went to the dealer, he recommended an oil change. I told him that the manual says 60K but he mentioned that they usually do it every 35K miles. I should double check it.

Do NOT do any flush of the transmission system. This will cause damage to the transmission and will eventually need a new one in short time. The only approved transmission fluid change is a drain and fill.

I don't remember if all of the TSX's have the MM system but it will come one when it is time to change that. Does the $150 include one drain and fill? If so that's really high and you are better off going to a Honda dealer to get it done. They will charge less money and it is the same fluid. Or...you can go to your Honda dealership and get the fluid for less and have someone else change it.

The manual does not mention if when the MM system comes on you only change the fluid once or do the drain and fill 3 times. If anyone has any official word from Honda, please share it along.

Hi guys, i have a 2005 Acura TL Auto trans and i will be changing the 3rd and 4th pressure switches (thanks to other post that helped me figure out the blinking D indicator) and i also wanted to do a transmission flush. I'm the second owner of the vehicle so i have no idea if the tranny had been flushed before. Anyhow it has 117K miles, would you guys advise a 3x3 flush and what type transmission fluid should i use?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kev

I do mine about every 60k i think, 05 TSX. I have my records on my blog going back to 25k miles. I just rolled 410k so you should be good with every 60k.

It also depends on the kind of driving you do. I'm in NYC with a lot of stop and go. I also drive enthusiastically. I'd do mine every 40k miles.
