wheel locks

so it happened today, the left side of my car was jacked up and both rims/tires were gone. was supossed to be a normal day of work, but oh well.

freakin lowlifes!

Anyway, i am now getting wheel locks so this doesnt happen again. Has anyone heard of the the wheel locks failing? Will they always protect the rims from being stolen (short of the whole car being stolen that is)?

Thanks,
Jonathan

all wheel locks can be removed one way or another and the key to the locks can be purchased almost anywhere i have a different lock on each wheel i have to keep four keys hiding in my car call me anal....

but does give you piece of mind knowing that it will most likely probably discourage someone and have them move on

Fortunately, I've never been violated in the way you describe here, but I do have an opinion. Wheels lock evidently serve in the same way as pretty much any normal lock such as the lock on your front door, the cable lock on your bicycle, or a padlock on your storage locker. These all serve to basically keep honest people honest. If someone really wants in or it, it's theirs. With the rights tool(s) and determination, just about any lock is vulnerable. That said, although I'm confident they'll be many on this forum who'll say they're a waste of money, I'd recommend wheels locks. They may deter a spur of the moment opportunist, and will probably assure that anyone who really wants your wheels most likely won't get them without doing some damage, thereby severely diminishing their value. Check ebay, they seem to be a popular item for sale.

Sorry to hear that man. What kind of rims did you have if you don't mind me asking?

I'm considering A-spec rims but the whole them potentially being jacked even with wheel locks kind of makes me think twice =T

Sorry to hear that. I've seen a horrible news before about a Cadillac dealer. The whole chrome wheels on their cars at the dealer shop were stolen through the night and I was really suprised when I heard what the technician said "It takes less than 30 sec to remove a set of wheels if thives have right tools."
Anyway, I don't think there is a way to prevent this with wheel locks so I think very strong alarm system might help better.

Revenant,

I had stock rims! nothing special at all.

I agree that to the casual thief it will deter and to the determined thief it prob wont.

If it can happen to Bernie, it can happen to anyone....

Like what others have mentioned, wheel locks are a deterrent. They won't stop a properly equipped "professional", but if they do give the bum a few extra seconds of misery, then they might think twice.

Sorry to hear about the theft...

I agree with the above posts that the locks serve as deterrents rather than guarantees that your property remain yours. I have McGuard wheel locks and I also put a Club on my steering wheel for extra deterrent. I think the Club is a good idea in Toronto at least where there's apparently been a large increase of airbag thefts. The Club can be taken off in like 15-20 sec with the right tools but that 15-20 sec extra time might be enough to fend off a thief.

I wish I can make my car shock anyone who touches it, like the BMW 7 series in Tomorrow Never Dies

keep this in mind, if there's a will there's a way. The locks will just slow the thieves down but that doesn't mean they can't steal the wheels. It happened to me personally. Sorry to hear your loss.
