What's your favorite shift?

To me, this is a totally separate question from "What's your favorite gear?" and I think people were confusing the two. This should make it more clear. Everyone please post!

Mine's 5-4. Blip it, pull the shifter straight back, and I'm gone!

Edit: I didn't include double-upshifts (because those are boring ) or triple-downshifts (does anyone really do that?), or double-downs into 1st (does anyone really NEED to do that?). Hopefully I've got everyone covered.

Edit again: This thread isn't just for MT snobs. You AT guys can shift too, when you want!

5-4 is the sweetest ever since I installed the intake. Full throttle pass on the highway in fourth sounds mean and pulls hard.

My MT snobbiness is ingrained!

Edit: @ 5-6! I didn't even see that.

Back when I had my TSX...6th to 3rd was the best. Nice cruising in 6th around 55 mph on the slow-ass Oregon highway. I see an opening....RWWWWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, thunk (4th), RWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, "oh crap oh crap I'm going to get nailed", thunk, (6th).

in my AT, it's 5 -> 2, since 2 redlines at ~65-70 mph

If 1>3 was available I would have picked that. Basically what I do everytime i'm at the front of a red light and in city traffic.
My second gear doesn't get too much love.

I didn't think many people would like that one....

I'd think that 3rd is too high to get good engine braking in traffic....

By double-downs, are you talking about something like 4-3-2? Or 4-2 directly (skipping 3rd)?

I guess I'm the only one who shifts 6-3, to pass people on the highway. 3rd goes up to 85mph.

You must not like your synchros.

I like shifting from 3rd to 4th, it's the smoothest and the cleanest.

I'm not sure I undertand your reply. Basically what I meant was that I like flooring it in 1st (which takes me to about 35 mph) and then settling down into 3rd gear so I can drive the speed limit.

either way..rock on.

Oh. I thought you were talking about crawling through stop-and-go traffic. Your post makes sense now.

If I could edit the poll for you, I would...

You're not doing any at all in that case, but I doubt sho is doing that every time.

hmm maybe I'm not following, I don't do it all the time, but when I do do it the car seems fine with it. Please explain how I'm destroying my sycros? when I'm crusing at like 75-70, dropping to forth doesn't put me into the sweet spot. It's not like I shift from 6, then rev it hard, and then shift to 3rd. I just take it out of 6, and then drop it to third and hold on.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission6.htm read

Manual transmissions in modern passenger cars use synchronizers to eliminate the need for double-clutching. A synchro's purpose is to allow the collar and the gear to make frictional contact before the dog teeth make contact. This lets the collar and the gear synchronize their speeds before the teeth need to engage, like this:

The cone on the blue gear fits into the cone-shaped area in the collar, and friction between the cone and the collar synchronize the collar and the gear. The outer portion of the collar then slides so that the dog teeth can engage the gear.

Every manufacturer implements transmissions and synchros in different ways, but this is the general idea.
If you rev match its not too hard on the synhro and if you double clutch letting the shaft free to spin then you're hurting it less..

If you just jam it into third without rev matching you can see by the diagram that it wouldnt be very good now would it?

If this doesnt make sense go back to http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission1.htm and read through the entire thing

I wouldn't worry about the double clutching part, rev-matching should be good enough. If you want to get to third from sixth, you really should go to fith and fourth first. You need to get your transmission up to speed before you get on the gas.

I thought this thread was going to be about work shifts.

I like the shift down to 2nd when coming off a highway off ramp into a decreasing radius turn.

So many choices. I've narrowed down between shifting from 1 to 2 and downshifting from 5 to 4. I can't decide...

Agree on getting the tranny up to speed, but you might as well double clutch if you're gonna do all that....

I think FF ruined the reputation of double clutching for everyone. Stupid movies...

C'mon, Rice! Everybody ELSE like 5-4.... How could an upshift possibly be more fun than a downshift?!

i feel for your tranny

if i really need to pass someone, all i have to do is downshift to fifth...

why would you downshift to third going 70? ouch! when you pass someone, do you floor it too? goodness, it's not neccessary.

I agree. Although I have a TL, if I ever needed to perform that shift, I would double-clutch that shift (although we have synchros and all that jazz). You can pop in the gear much smoother than if you didn't. Still going 75mph downshifting to 3rd...don't you have to upshift @ 80 before you hit fuel cutoff?
