what to do.

I just bought a certified 2004 tsx and it has 2 major problems.

1. It starts shaking when it goes over 60
2. I am getting about 19 mpg highway driving.

What are my options =(

forget certified, it may have the balance of the factory warranty left.

The shaking could be the brakes or a balancing problem. Try getting a balance job on a Hunter Road force machine and get the brakes checked out as well. Now would be a good time to interface with your local dealer.

Some 2004 TSXs are still under the factory warranty, what is your mileage and the original purchase date?

Does the shaking happen only when applying brakes or any time you get to 60mph? If its only when applying brakes then its most likely the "warped rotor" issue (do a search on "warped rotor" for more info) which should be covered under your certification. If its any time you reach 60mph then a) have your wheels re-balanced (as Luv suggested), b) check your tires for bubbles or unusual wear, and c) check your rims to see if any are bent.

As far as your mileage, do you have AT or MT? A lot of variables come in play. Driving style, alignment, fuel type (do you use 91 octane), how you calculate your mileage, etc.

A dragging brake could cause both of those problems. Just something to look for.

I just picked this car up a few days ago from the dealership at 20k miles and it's AT.

The shaking only happens when I hit 60-65 so it's not a brake issue. I have scheduled appointments at the dealership but will they be able to do the Hunter Road Force balance as LuvMyTsx mentioned or will I have to go somewhere else for that. Anyways the dealer has requested to drive the car with me so hopefully this problem doesn't go away when he's in the car only to resurface on hte drive home.

Also, I've noticed that even at low speeds, when I feather the gas, I hear an audible whine coming from the engine / transmission. If anyone has ridden in a yellow school bus they will know what I'm talking about. I have driven many many cars before and none have had this sound. Just wondering if it's normal.

It could still be the brake even if it doesn't vibrate until 60 mph. Note that 60 mph is faster than 50 mph or 40 mph. It might also be the CV joint.

That wine is normal, although I seem to notice it more at higher speeds, like freeway speeds.

I think it depends on whether they have the Hunter machine or not. Its a good sign that they want to go with you on the test drive. This way they you can point out to them exactly what is happening. Ask to drive one of their AT loaners or test drive a new AT model and see if it makes the same whine that you describe.

on a sidenote, the dealer sprayed the entire car with this banana - ish scent. I live in a wooded area and when I went to open the door this morning about 50 ants were wedged in the space between teh door and the car. They weren't moving much so I thought maybe they got squished but as soon as I went to wipe them away they all scattered.

I hope they don't get into mechanical parts or vents that would make me

update:

so I went to the dealership closest to me (didn't buy car here) and the first thing they noticed was that there are 3 types of tires on the car. 2 yokohama avid V4s in the front, a stock michelin in the back and a no-brand in the back. All the tires had similar treadwear. that dealership refused to honor my limited warranty and wanted to charge me 180 for an alignment and balance. i was pretty sure they were fucking with me and argued for a while then gave up since i didn't want to deal with these aholes.

so as planned i'm gonna go to the place where i bought my car on monday morning and hopefully they can figure things out. pretty amazing they'll certify a car with 3 different wheels tho...

alignment and balance aren't warranty issues...they're vehicle maintenance and have no bearing on the quality of parts (warranty applies to parts that break or fail unexpectedly, but excludes wear & tear items like brake pads)

But yes, the previous owner was a cheapo and didn't properly replace the tires. The tires should have at least been replaced in pairs (left and right). Mis-matched tires could cause the problem

i don't mash the gas, but i drove about 50 miles with 150 lbs worth of furniture in the back. the rest of the 200 miles was all hilly and somewhat stop and go. even so, i was sitll hoping for a little better than what i got. i'm also not sure the dealer put in 91.

My Corvette has almost the same highway EPA millage as my 2008 TSX, 27 for the Vette and 28 for the TSX. My LS has a V8 and gets about the same millage as your TSX is getting.
