Want to buy a used TSX: Best Year and Things to Look for
Hi all,
I am interested in buying a used 2004-06 TSX. I am hoping you can help me. I am a tightwad so I want to spend as little as possible maybe 10-13K through a private party sale so I think I am looking at 60k-90k mile cars
1) Is one year better than another?
2) What are the common failure problems to look for?
3) Cost of ownership--low, medium or high?
Thanks!

Well...
04-05 have a little less HP than 06-08 but are also lighter b/c of less amenities. For your price range, an 04-05 is a better bet but you may find a 06 that fits the bill.
1) Model year supremacy is in the eye of the beholder. 06 has Bluetooth and pass. memory seats BUT the 09 Tech I drove for a week (loaner for warranty work) BT sucked and had to dial #s on my phone anyway to connect and NO ONE rides shotgun in my 04 so memory pass. seats are pointless for me.
2) A/C, Heated seat switch lights, Clutch(sometimes) are common problems I have noticed.
3) I say low to medium. I use Mobil1 oil & filters and change every 6-7k miles, which translates to ~1.5 changes a year. Premium gas means more at fill up, but I average 27.5 mpg MIXED ( well modded too )where as my 05 Quest averages 18.4 mpg on regular. Tires are easy as long as you don't go for super pricey tires.
BTW... the more I swap out stock pieces for aftermarket mods, I shave wieght off and increase my mpg avg. (and fun factor as well)

2006. It was the MMC so they added a bunch of features.
As for the common problems, search is your friend. Take a look in the problems & fixes section above.

He wont be able to find an 06 for $10,000 to $13,000. Maybe an 04 or high mileage 05? Should definitely stick to the 05 for that price range. o4 was first year of model. Has issues such as AC compressor and Center Console lights going out.

Or find a friend with access to auctions. I had a hookup and still did the retarded thing and bought a new '08 last year (non-navi..paid over $31k after ttl/2.9% apr considered).
I have access to Manheim, an auto auction site (has post sale results among other things), and it looks like 2006 TSX's go for $14k-$16k avg. Auctions are generally the cheapest places to get cars (unless you score a deal in a private sale).
You can definitely hit your target price with an 05, one w/87k miles went for $9600 and the prices went up to ~$13k. FWIW.
